I was kinda sceptical about #SXSWsydney when I thought it was a tech conference. Til I met some people in the music industry who thought it was a music industry conference. And some people in the film industry. Now I'm starting to get it

As you would expect the organisers, Destination NSW and the main venue all claimed it was a great success, however there were also plenty of points to the contrary. #eventprofsay #sxswsydney

Interesting first year for #SXSWSydney.
A lot of consternation about the line ups and the platinum passes not really helping people get into sessions with huge demand. Charlie Brooker, for instance, was closed off to at least... 500 or 600 people waiting in line.
The Games Festival elements were way too far away from the centre of the festival, in Darling Harbour. Felt like a little bit disrespect, a little bit... don't care enough? I'm not sure.
One of my personal, unspoken (until now) takeaways from #SXSWSydney is that I need to write more.
Not only my 1,000 word pieces, not just prose in general. What I need to do is pull my finger out and write *everything* that sits inside my head.
The TTRPG ideas, the comics, the feature length films. Everything.
I need to be able to point at robdoeswords.com and say "this is what I do. I am a writer, and here you can read it." Whether I'm speaking to a film producer, or some random guy sitting with me at a bar. Being able to put myself, and my work out there, regardless of my own personal view of it is *vitally* important.
Epiphany realized, I'm going to have some ice cream

Sharing again my favourite talk from SXSW Sydney yesterday, which was different from the usual digital tech ones that I went to. Ben Lamm (Colossal Biosciences) and Prof Andrew Pask (University of Melbourne) are partnering to bring back the thylacine from extinction! Amused to hear that Andrew has had a pigeonhole full of bags of dog poo due to enthusiastic Tasmanians thinking they have found evidence of it in the wild. Another interesting fact was that because the thylacine is a marsupial, it is born tiny (to grow up in a pouch) and so might be birthed by a much smaller marsupial in order to bring it back. Also, rewilding an apex predator into an environment can help protect wildlife because it displaces less discriminating feral cats. They dropped hints that they might have a thylacine born within the next 5 years. Amazing what bleeding-edge work is being done here in Australia! #SXSWSydney #rewilding #thylacine
Huge congratulations to Black Salt Games on their first #goty, at #SXSWSydney. Incredibly well deserved.
I'm loving my time in Sydney, and SXSW.
I am not loving how corporate the whole thing is. Many of the panels and sessions are just ads dressed up as something else.

My favourite talk from SXSW Sydney yesterday was a panel on Thriving in the Future of Work, including people from Slack, Atlassian and REA Group. Key points from the panelists included (i) having diverse teams made up of people-who-know-why-stuff-won't-work ("wisdom workers") and people-who-have-just-joined-so-don't-see-why-stuff-shouldn't-work is a killer combo for achieving change, but does make it harder to manage, and (ii) in an AI-enhanced and more remote workforce, having the skills for understanding and effectively working with people will be even more important, although these tend not to be taught in school (even though team sports and group projects exist). #SXSWSydney #FutureOfWork #FutureHuman
"Australian companies' strength is they are good at bootstrapping.." Which begs the question if being starved of capital is a good thing #SXSWSydney
@franksting @paulwallbank they were asked about AI and were optimistic about it. Ross Dawson even runs this https://rossdawson.com/humans-plus-ai/ #sxswsydney
The future of work: does the focus on short term productivity encourage busy-work over medium and ling term value? It's a good question. #sxswsydney
My favourite talk from SXSW Sydney yesterday (and I could only sample a few talks given how many happen simultaneously or hit capacity early) was by Tom Verrilli (a.k.a. MonsterRobot), ex-Twitch Chief Product Officer. He was keen to emphasise the important role for online identities being separate to real-life identities, e.g. Japanese Twitter users had 6 different handles. (Don't force users to only use real-life identities, or it will result in a less-engaged user base.) However, the saddest fact I heard was that 30% of YouTube videos are watched on the toilet. #sxswsydney #onlineidentity
Listening to @kcarruthers hosting a panel on the risks of AI to people's identity. It's interesting how responsiblity is being thrown onto the individual. #sxswsydney
