How do they do it?

My Saffron stays green all winter and has completely died back above ground by early June. They come up again at the end of August-early September. It’s hard to imagine they are creating more plant mass in the winter — but they keep making new corms every year??

The price for #Saffron this year seems to be around 3500€/kg for both Spanish and Afghan origin. I just ordered 5 grams to stock up (it lasts very long, as you really only need minuscule amounts). #LifeHack you can also give your rice a nice yellow colour with #Turmeric AKA #Kurkuma. But the saffron aroma is unbeatable, IMHO.

A light purple saffron crocus flower with six teardrop-shaped petals. Each petal starts narrow and flares out at the top, then comes quickly back into a point. There are slightly darker lavender colored stripes that also flare out - looking like fancy plumes or Art Nouveau patterns. Three yellow pollen covered stamens poke out of the center, as well as three reddish orange filaments that drape out onto the lower petals. Its leaves look like blades of grass. Around it and out of focus, some more green shoots are poking up out of the soil.

@ludibriumventis my daughter Rebecca and I made a raised bed and planted about 150 Saffron corms in 2020. Last June I dug up all the corms and divided into 3 sizes groups: large, medium, and tiny. I shared a bunch with friends and replanted. Seems new daughter corms start every year and after a couple years the original fades away. We had many more flowers after replanting the bed this year!
