My mentees this year in the Urban DNA Barcoding Research Program. They'll be continuing our work on bird diversity at the Marine Nature Study Area in Oceanside, NY, which we've been doing for the past three years. They were doing the field component of their study, collecting feathers for DNA extraction and sequencing. #DNAbarcoding #birds #biodiversity #saltmarsh #ecology #climatechange

Having lived near the Minas Basin of the Bay of Fundy in Sipekne'katik #Novascotia and now beside a tidal #mudflat this video was fascinating. I find these natural sea/landscapes endlessly changing and dynamic. This type of research and restoration is essential to renewing the health of our #ecosystems Great to see this work being done in #scotland #wetland #saltmarsh youtu.be/BniwJrxJhcw

Photo of tidal marsh as the water is receding. Previously submerged green plants grow out of the mud and water. Caption says "And when the tide recedes, all of this brings in the birds." Blue sky and green hills on the far side of the firth.Shorebirds gathering on the mud at the edges of clumps of sea weeds. Receding waters and green hills in the background. Some of the green clumps of weeds are still floating on the blue/grey waters.

The last few poly tunnel volunteering sessions have been listed on our website including the one with mince pies, the team Christmas lunch has been booked. It's definitely getting to the end of the year.
Meantime, on the saltmarsh, the plants keep growing, or are in dormancy waiting for better conditions to grow again. The fencing should protect this year's plantings from some of the effects of the winter storms.

Shrubby Glasswort in a salt marsh.

A lush brown and green salt marsh on the North Sea coast in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, with a wooden staircase with a railing leading down to it in the foreground. A narrow footpath connects to it at the bottom and leads through the meadow, which stretches to the horizon, where the sky is still glowing orange after sunset. A few grey clouds move shadowy across the sky.

A long, narrow sand and gravel path, partially covered with puddles, runs from the centre of the foreground to the fine black horizon line in the background through a flat salt marsh, dividing it into two halves. The sky is an almost cloudless light grey area in the upper part of the black-and-white image.

This is one of the wooden bridges on the trail crossing the Salt Marsh. On the map which you can see by going up the thread, it looks as if we rode our bikes through the water. I love how the vanishing point in the bridge meets the vanishing point of the light clouds above, with the sun in the middle.

A wood plank bridge with wood railings leads us across a body of water. The few wispy clouds in the blue sky reflect the perspective of the vanishing point of the wood bridge rails.
