Some sparkling later...

1. Lift one end with the 3 point hitch
2. Shove the log wheels under
3. Strap on
4. Lift other end and pull with tractor
5. Log go vroom!
6. Attach empty wheels directly to tractor for return trip

Much better than making an epic mess of the yard by skidding them around and also no dirt on the log, which is nicer for sawmilling later.

I can think of several improvements already. And I want a shorter ratchet strap but don't want to cut mine off 🤔

Also the wheel with the fence post bearing sleeve wobbles a bit 😁

Sorry about decreasing photo quality, that daylight thing is broken.

Hacking together a quick & dirty log hauling thing from this axle with one wheel and one wheel with cut off axle I found in the junk piles a while ago.

Wanted to do nicer but I need it now :)

#Farm #Hack #DIY #Logging #Forestry #Homestead #Steel #Junk #SalvagePunk

Two steel wheels. One has a ~1m long axle attached to it with no wheel on the other end. The axle is clamped into a big drill press vise sitting on an upside down beer crate. Another wheel with a short cut-off axle is on the opposite side, just kinda leaning there. The stubby axle is being extracted. Here the final stage of escalation, driving it out with Mjölnir, the wheel crookedly sitting on two steel sawhorses, also from the yard junk. Mjölnir is a big hammer that is staged on the axle stub here. The two wheels now mounted on the same axle with the help of two steel pipe sleeves made from a fencepost and some other junk. A very rusty piece of C-beam is on top of it. It looks like it just got dug out of the earth, which is indeed the case.

Have I praised these wire baskets yet? They're actually great. I don't know who makes them, but they're not unique to this place, you see them a lot in Lithuania and probably neighbouring countries.

They're clearly handmade. The frame is a bit of steel wire for strength, then aluminium wire from recycled power cables stripped of their insulation woven around that, with an old plastic pipe over the handle.

Unlike wicker or plastic baskets, they last basically forever, you can hose down whatever is inside with water and they don't mind and they're sturdy enough to carrry heavy loads.

Germany: Our car industry is dying!

Me: Impossible! Your Volkswagen garlic curing racks were legendary!

An improvised garden workspace, where dried garlic bulbs are being pulled from the slotted radiator grille of a Volkswagen Golf 2 that has been repurposed as hanging rack. A few are already in a plastic crate.

I present you the rarest of animals on our little homestead: A finished project!

A fence-straddling firewood store for the sauna on the other side and some nice fruit tree logs for the #wheelbarbie on this side.

Also currently onion+garlic drying station. It's so good at that, I'll definitely keep the feature.

Made from old concrete pylons I pulled out of the garden, some scrap steel, some logs that were destined to be firewood, a couple recycled shack planks, a lot of old sheet metal riveted together and an ancient roll of tar paper.

Total cost about €30, mostly for paints and a few screws. Bonus: Less junk laying around!

#SalvagePunk #Homestead #Firewood #DIY #Construction #Recycling #ReUse

The little firewood store outside the sauna. The dented sheetmetal roof is now painted with two coats of green paint which almost matches the green fake tile roof of the larger sauna building behind it. Split firewood is stacked, drying in the sun. The dry leaves of onions are dangling upside down under the warm metal roof. The fence gate is open and a telescoping ladder is on the other side.

Pulled out the rest of the onions and garlic, apart from a few that are going to produce seeds for keeping.

Ran out of space on the ladder drying rack so I looked around what else I can use.

Obvious choice: Car parts!

The broken Astra grille and a Golf 2 one that the old man left us, probably from when he had his last crash and they took away his driving license, greatly impairing his lifestyle but making the roads safer 🤔

Anyways, perfect for putting garlic and small onions in to cure.

Side of a garden bed. A wire basket contains onions, mostly red. The concrete behind has a bunch of freshly pulled garlic resting on it. Only weeds remain in this garden area now.The air intake grille from an Astra J. The right part is broken off because someone didn't look where they were going and backed into our parked car. Now it rests on two beams which in turn sit on two sawhorses in the grass. Small onions, red and white are stuck upside down through the holes in the grille, fitting nicely. Their leaves are dangling down.A VW Golf 2 grille with some red paint on it and big holes where the headlights and Volkswagen emblem go. Garlic with long strong roots is shoved through the slatted holes, upside down.A firewood storage area. Under the roof, a wooden ladder has been improvised into a large onion curing rack by adding lots of extra sticks parallel to the wooden steps, with onions stuck between them. The red VW grille is continuing where the ladder ends and stuck full of garlic. The Opel grille is somewhat obscured behind the two and full of onions.

Sidequest today: Make a keyboard, because I'm always fishing around in the pile of keys to find the right one.

Some planks salvaged from that 1988 beehive. Nothing fancy, pull out the rusty nails, cut off the rotten ends, two angled cuts along a guide. Glue and nail, patch some holes.

Then melted some of the ancient honeycomb to experiment with hot wax [disable safety advice]. Poured it through a t-shirt offcut to filter and applied it hot onto the wood. This worked until it cooled down too much, so I fixed that with the heat gun and hooray, the old wood glows.

A keepsake from the old beekeeper who has been dead a decade. I hope to take up her beekeeping some day, but far too many projects at the moment.

A rusty old enamel cookpot filled with dirty old honeycomb that's been sitting in a beekeeping shed for at least a decade. There's a rusty old knife to match. The scene is outdoors in front of a bush. The wooden keyboard with wax applied, but too thickly and having left streaks of rapidly cooling wax. It looks dull! The same wood and a few cotton rags next to it. The wax has been re-heated and the excess wiped off, giving it a darker glow that brings out the pattern of the wood nicely instead of the foggy look previously. The newly minted keyboard, now mounted on a mint coloured wall. Some nails have been hammered into it to hold various keys, which are now dangling there. No drying time and it smells nice!

Been cutting, grinding and welding all day.

The swine fodder trough we've been using as grill got a wheel and legs and handles. All of it from scrap metal that was laying around the farm. Ok, and old fence posts. Those were actually standing around. Anyways, 100% #SalvagePunk

I made the wheel non-removable, because it's not like it'll ever need to get a new tyre.

I guess it's a wheelbarbie now.

Still need to trim the handles to length and clean it up a little, but we got hungry, so I fired it up, still hot from welding.

Two metal pipes in various states of rustyiness, laid together at an angle. Where they join, one has been cut to match the other. One part is has fresh metal ground for welding. The wheelbarbie mid construction. The trough is upside down on a table, the spoke steel rimmed wheel already welded in place on two angled legs welded to an axle and the other leg has been manufactured from a plow share welded to two more pipes at an angle. This is currently held to the trough with two large C-clamps. Some welding magnets are idling on top of the trough and various tools are around. A stack of logs is behind and a parked car in front of a garden. The finished wheelbarbie, now upright, standing on the wide rimmed steel wheel and the plowshare leg. It has handles on the side with the fixed leg, which are currently still different lengths, with a bend in the longer one. It looks chunky and weighs so much I couldn't lift it off the table, but had to throw it off, which it shrugged off.The same wheelbarbie, now with hot ash and embers inside, a still improvised grill on top and some ribs and sausages on top. A few tools are laid across the handles, including a plank holding a stainless steel bowl.

Found some legs for the BBQ.

No idea what they were before, looks like maybe a roof for a tractor (imagine it having some canvas across the top frame).

Also a wheel, as per @mcSlibinas' recommendation. Maybe a bit large?

#BBQ #Grill #DIY #Welding #Scrap #SalvagePunk #Homestead #Steel #Rust

A bunch of rusty steel scrap sitting in the grass. It has four legs which can be folded in and a roof frame with a few thin bars between them. Some old strings dangle from the roof part. It could have supported some canvas and worked as removable roof to stick onto a tractor or other machine.A bunch of rusty scrap on an old wooden pallet. There's the swine fodder trough from before, upside down, two legs from the previous tractor roof, now separated and a big welded steel wheel with steel spokes and thick walled steel tyre. Finally a sunny day for BBQ. Drilled some ventilation holes into the salvaged pig trough grill. Seems to work very well now. Still gotta add some legs to it.

#BBQ #Homestead #SalvagePunk #Grill #Food #Eggplant #Sausage

A former steel pig trough, now a BBQ. There's hot wood and ash inside, a grille on top supported by a piece from a harrow and some partially grilled pork sausages on top. On the side you can see five freshly drilled ventilation holes. It's in overgrown grass on some improvised legs that are actually parking blocks for a plow.Same grill, now with some marinated eggplant slices on top that are partially browned on one side.

Since I was already covered in rust and had some time left before tonights Eurovision semi-finale, I tackled this old chair frame from the junk pile.

We need some garden furniture!

Cleaned up slightly, bent into shape and welded back together. More rust converter and some ancient red spray can where the pigment had settled out. That actually made for a nice effect.

Two pieces of salvaged wood, a bit of sawing, sanding and testing of that angle grinder carving disc I got a while ago.

Finally slapped on some "deck oil" from an old can.

Looks very #SalvagePunk!

I enjoyed this quick & intentionally imperfect job. It's fun to get results in under two hours 😁

We'll see if it's even comfy and how it endures outside.

#DIY #Chair #Furniture #WoodWorking #Welding #Restoration

Rusty bent and broken steel pipe frame from an old chair. It's missing seat and backrest. Someone wiped off a brush with black paint on it.Same frame, now bent back in shape, rewelded, cleaned and painted in irregular red on black. It's sitting on a dirty outdoor workbench. Some old scrap wood. A piece of beetle eaten fir with the bark and beetle dust knocked off and two planks. One of them is clamped to the workbench and sanded, the other has some remaining gray paint on it. Both have rusty nail holes. The finished chair, with the two planks forming a slatted seat. They're now sanded and oiled, but the rust marks remain. The backrest is carved in a wobbly pattern, edges and corners rounded and also oiled. The frame is red, nicely contrasting with the oiled wood. It sits in the grass waiting to dry and get tested.

Norfa had some nice sausages on sale, which led to this improvised BBQ.

Steel trough (probably used to feed swine), chiseled out the cement someone mixed in it before, put it on two plow/harrow rests. One a bit shorter, so bricks to help.

A grille from an old refrigerator and one I found under a rotten door on the barn floor, rust beaten/brushed off and sterilized with fire.

Even found my old tongs from many marina winter BBQs.

Scavenger BBQ ready! 😁

It's already eaten and was delicious.

#BBQ #Homestead #DIY #SalvagePunk #Scrap

Scrap BBQ parts we had laying around the farm. There's two rusty old stands for parking a harrow on (one had to be levered out of the ground first and the harrow suspended on something else). They're not the same height. And a trough welded from three thick steel pieces. Somebody has previously abused it for mixing concrete, which needed chiseling out. A chisel rests inside and some concrete debris.BBQ in action. The two stands, now leveled with some old bricks have the trough standing on them (it fits in the gaps between the joined pipes). Inside are embers from a wood fire and a large grille suspending a smaller one. On that, six thick sausages, nicely brown already.

Got your collapse computing right here!

Would like to put this GPU in the Mac Pro, but haven't been able to figure out the OpenCore/EnableGOP flashing of the card ROM to get a boot screen. :( So I figured I'll have to live with two desktop machines for at least a while, and dragged this one down into the basement.

But the case really needed some side panels if it's going to live under the workbench here. At first I was thinking plywood, but didn't have any pieces large enough, so turned to that other wonder of the modern world: cardboard.
