Got Shrimp

Here’s a moment where a laughing gull (Leucophaeus atricilla) swooped down and plucked a shrimp straight from the surf—mid-flight, mid-feast, mid-ceremony. And of course, a sanderling (Calidris alba) wandered into the frame, photobombing with perfect timing and coastal dignity.

I captured this scene on the beach at Gulfport, Mississippi.

Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story.

"A laughing gull launches into flight from the edge of a sandy shoreline, wings outstretched in a bold upward sweep. Its black-tipped wings slice the air with precision, while its white underbelly and slate-gray back shimmer against the muted tones of the surf. Clutched in its beak is a pale shrimp—its curved body and trailing legs visible midair, as if caught in a moment of mythic offering.

Behind the airborne gull, a small sanderling stands on the wet sand, near the water’s edge. Its compact body, pale plumage, and dark beak mark it as a quiet sentinel of the shore. The sanderling’s posture is still and observant, as if bearing witness to the gull’s ceremonial harvest from the receding tide.

Between them lies a dark piece of driftwood or debris, half-submerged in the surf—a relic of the tide’s retreat and a visual anchor in the composition. The water itself is textured with gentle ripples, lapping softly onto the sand. The scene is a study in contrast: motion and stillness, feast and observation, skyward ascent and grounded presence." - Microsoft Copilot

This is a piece called "Sandpiper Spotlight". I made it at the request of a patron to my art booth, but entered it at a local art show as a limited edition, signed and numbered print. It was granted an Honorable Mention by the show's judge, and then promptly sold off the wall that night!

I tried hard to use the filigree lines to help communicate a sense of water. I'm heavily inspired by the work of Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh, and the interesting textural Art Nouveau styling she developed. I love her work, and it has deeply influenced me and everything I do.

Regardless, this piece is entirely done in Procreate by hand, with no generative image-slop assistance.

l made it a greeting card that can be purchased here: https://goimagine.com/sandpiper-spotlight-bird-greeting-card-5x7-with-envelope/

Dune Runner

It’s always a delight to watch sanderlings (Calidris alba) dash along the shoreline—chasing retreating waves and scampering away as they surge forward again.

Here, a lone sanderling races across the crest of a low dune at Holly Beach, Louisiana.

"A single sanderling—a small shorebird with a snowy white underside and soft brown-gray plumage—dashes across the crest of a low dune at the beach. Its slender black legs blur in motion, a rapid-fire rhythm that gives the impression of weightless urgency. The bird’s beak, thin and pointed, tilts slightly downward as if scanning the sand for secrets or offerings.

The dune itself is pale and smooth, its sandy surface kissed by wind and time. It rises gently, like a soft wave frozen mid-gesture, offering the sanderling a momentary stage. Behind the bird, the ocean stretches out in a blur of gentle blues and silvers, its waves subdued and distant, like a murmuring chorus.

The background is softly out of focus, allowing the sanderling to shine in crisp detail—its feathers catching the light, its posture alert and purposeful. The entire scene feels like a fleeting ceremony: the bird’s dash across the dune a sovereign act, brief and brilliant, against the vast hush of sea and sky." - Microsoft Copilot

I love the soft pastel colors that come out just after sunset. This Sanderling was feeding along the coast, running back and forth with the tide as they do.

I love the patterns on this Black-bellied Plover as it molts out of its breeding plumage. It is such a stunning bird, especially against the blue water and white surf. Taken after sunset, I dropped the shutter speed to 1/13 second to further soften the crashing waves.

Semipalmated Sandpiper at the golden hour (along with some shellfish appetizers). The sandpipers and plovers were hiding in some shadowy outcroppings of rock along a runnel. Nice of the only semipalmated sandpiper to turn in such a way that I could capture him against the encroaching darkness.
