Ice scapes on my commute. Should have taken the skates rather than the bike. #winterbiking #biking #yxe #saskatchewanriver

View over a wide partially frozen river with a small weir on the right. The ice on the left has a lovely striped pattern. A large chunk about the size and shape of a plane wing has broken off the ice shelf. On the other side of the ball one can see trees and some buildings. It’s a colour picture but the sky is overcast so everything is greyA foot path covered in thick lumpy ice. Dirty snow banks on either side. Trees in the background

After frostnipping my face yesterday on my commute, I needed a reminder of why I bike. #bike2work #yxe #SaskatchewanRiver

The bike wouldn't start this morning so I had to walk. The wind on the bridge was brutal, as you can see by the ice patterns it made on the river. (Wind was blowing upriver: from the right) #SaskatchewanRiver #yxe

YORK FACTORY EXPRESS JOURNAL, 1849:
"Had a heavy shower of rain in the evening. Mr. Brazeau arrived from Fort Assiniboine but brings no word of Mr. McDougall.
"Monday. The Columbia boat and two others left Edmonton about 4 am. Mr. Rowand having started two hours after us, but his boat being better manned came up to us at 3 o'clock pm.
"Tuesday. Drifted all last night. Weather very warm. Arrived at Fort Pitt an hour before sunset. We found here upwards...

YORK FACTORY EXPRESS JOURNAL, 1835:
"From Cedar Lake to this place [Cumberland House] the country is low, full of small lakes and arms of the main river, and during the spring floods must be, from its trifling elevation, entirely or in great measure inundated. The driest and most elevated portions of those low grounds are covered with willows and the most parts with reeds, long grass and rushes. One or two high points in the river are covered by pines....

YORK FACTORY EXPRESS JOURNAL, 1847:
"Fine weather. Pulled through the remainder of Cedar Lake, and breakfasted at the other end of Cross Lake. In the forenoon 3 boats were broken in the Red Stone Rapid , and as a good deal of time was lost in repairing them, we only got as far as the head of the Grand Rapids, where we encamped. Rained very hard in course of the day.
"12th. Rained all morning and could not start until after breakfast...

YORK FACTORY EXPRESS JOURNAL, 1849:
"Started this morning at 2 am. Sailed to the first point in Lac Bourbon, where we breakfasted. Pulled and saile across Lac Traverse , at the end of which we encamped.
"14th. By 10 am all the boats were safely taken down to the end of Grand Rapid. Here we found an Indian with his canoe, which with two men Mr. Rowand despatches to Lake to see if the passage was clear. The canoe returned after an absence..

Signs of spring... Less ice now, and the water level has dropped. I'd be ready for the melt though. #yxe #SaskatchewanRiver

Walking at cranberry flats is one of the pressure of living in #yxe. Lovely views of the river, dramatic cracks in the ice, and treasure! #saskatchewanRiver #Saskatoon

Some birds are always a bit more dramatic than others! American white pelicans at the weir in Saskatoon.

#pelican #birds #birding #birdphotography #birdwatching #prairiebirds #waterbirds #saskatchewanriver #saskatoon #yxe #meewasin

Two pelicans are swimming on choppy waters, one with wings slightly raised, the other with wings dramatically flung back in a V-shape, bill mostly in the water, intent on some morsel.

Why are you bothering me on a bad-hair day?? American white pelican on a sandbank in the South Saskatchewan river, Saskatoon, summer 2021.

#pelican #americanwhitepelican #prairiebirds #birds #birding #birdphotography #waterbirds #saskatchewanriver #saskatoon

A white pelican is standing on a sandbank in the middle of the river, its head turned sharply to the left, looking right at the camera. The wind is waving tussles of feathers on top of its head, in a attempted imitation of Boris Johnson. I do suspect though that that is where the similarity ends, as the pelican seems to dislike the attention....

A water strider on an ephemeral pond along the South Saskatchewan river. Slightly out of focus, so not able to identify the specific species.

A little pond strider, long legs extended, sits on a pond with plant growth visible through underneath the water surface. the body has a light blueish-gray colouring.

A beaver that has just emerged from the South Saskatchewan River, after tumbling over the weir in Saskatoon. In the first picture he seems to be summoning the force to acquire that stick in front of him. I love the mini bow-wave he creates as he enters the water in the second picture.

A very wet beaver is walking at the edge of the water. Their left front leg is extended, with the paw wide open, as if summoning the stick that lies about a foot in front of it.The same better decided to pass the stick, almost out of shot on the left of the picture, and is creating a bow wave as it enters the water.

Saskatoon was quite pretty this morning.

#winter #yxe #Saskatoon #Saskatchewanriver #winterPhotography #snow #ice #Foggy

The scene isnshot off a bridge overlooking the South Saskatchewan river. Half the river is iced over. The air is foggy, with the ghost of the Bessborough hotel looming on the left bank , with the right bank only showing winter vegetation.

Lesser yellowlegs wading through calm shallows on the South Saskatchewan river.

#birds #birding #birdphotography #birdwatching #wadingbirds #shorebird #Saskatchewanriver #prairiebirds

The lesser yellowlegs has as the be say, bright yellow legs, quite long. Only a small portion of the legs is visible above the water, which ripples outward from the bird. The reflections are mostly brown vegetation with dappled blue patches that would make an impressionist weep with joy.
