(I realise this is an aside to the issue described by the researchers)

Could a decryption key be hardwired into an anti-fuse #FPGA ?
Am I right to say that would be resistant to bit flips? Or would three be required so they can vote on the true decryption key?
I can come up with other ways to solve this, and I'm sure if it's the only thing holding back encrypted control of satellites, other more erudite minds could come up with elegant solutions.

Obviously this is a one-time thing unless you're willing to send unprogrammed anti-fuse FPGAs up there to store new keys. I have read in the lay-press that flash FPGAs are also SEU resistant, but this stuff is really outside my wheelhouse.

Not to say it won't take a few decades to fix the problem; I only mean to suggest it can probably be fixed.

OMG, it's not hard to do basic and it's not expensive (free options abound.) The recent launch of would be able to take advantage of this as well as disrupt the data links.

They didn't mention if any satellite controls were in the clear, and I doubt they were. So they CAN encrypt, they just chose not to do the data channels.

But ANYONE sending data via ANY network should be encrypting their data with keys that THEY control. 🤦‍♂️

Don't look up! Researchers created an easy way to receive satellite communication with 800$ equipment and were able to read everything from Telekom satellite messages to airplane WiFi sessions to military data. All be ause seemingly satellites don't do any encryption whatsoever. #cybersecurity #space #satellites

Successfully defeated my learning overwhelm and inertia today thanks to some input here on satellite listening!

First bird heard was SO-50 and then later astronaut Mike Fincke making contacts on the space station. With hams from New Jersey, CT, and Quebec. Clear as a bell on just 18° elevation with a Comet SBB5 mag mount dual band whip, Radioddity GD77 and opengd77!

Another listen with a teacher tomorrow!
