Today's harvest from the garden, minus any zucchini because I didn't spend much time looking. Picked the largest eggplants and a ones that were on a dying stalk, 2 cucumbers, 2 yellow crooknecks, and 580 grams / 20 ounces of runner beans.

A large pile of green beans, 2 green cucumbers, 2 yellow squash, and 8 dark purple eggplants most of which are very big.

Some 'early' morning photos of the garden getting some sun from the East, and a photo showing the summer squash plants that are more than 3 feet tall now not counting the raised bed, and a 'bush' acorn squash that has lots of vines going in all directions.

The early (perhaps mid) morning sun shining on the watermelon and honedew melon vines, the marigolds, the summer squash and zucchini, that are all in raised beds. There are trees and shrubs and flowers and fence and planters, and hummingbird feeder in the background. The raised bed with tomatoes, runner beans, and basil in the morning sun. There is a cattle panel trellis in the center of the bed that the tomatoes and beans are growing on. The Scarlett runner beans have many red flowers. There's trees, more beans, more tomatoes, grass, fence, a shed, and more in the background.A photo showing the height of the yellow summer squash plants. There is one leaf that is more than 3 feet tall from the soil in the bed. There is lawn, trees, shrubs, bushes, berries, grapes, birds, hills, sky, and air in the background.A photo showing a raised bed with bush type winter squash. There are 4 plants. The two far plants are butternut type and the two near plants are acorn. The near plants are clearly not very bushy and have vines growing out in several directions at a rate of almost a foot a day lately. There are pink/purple petunias, dry grass, catnip, a blue water barrel/butt, a shed, buckets, dirt, grass, a metal can for composting, a fence, and air.

Planted the 6 scarlet runner beans started indoors 12 days ago. They were growing too fast to wait any longer. Lots of roots.

A photo of 6 runner beans that were just planted. One is partially obscured by a hollyhock plant in the lower left. They are growing under a 10-line cattle panel that is their trellis. There are 2 or more bean seeds planted between where each runner bean plant was put and those will fill in the row. There is woven black 8 year old poly ground cover on both sides of the row that will be covered with mulch. There is a blue stripe poly pipe for irrigation that has been moved out of the way and is sitting to the right of the beans and more above them.

Some garden pics from when I was standing around waiting for a hummingbird that was almost in my face earlier when I didn't have a camera while looking for beans to pick.

Besides the runner bean flowers with no bird.. The tallest Sweet Marconi pepper plant, the acorn squash and melons in the ground patch with the potatoes beyond them, and the cucumbers.

A zoomed photo of scarlet runner bean flowers. They are bright red.A photo showing a sweet Marconi pepper plant with many peppers that are still green. They will be red when fully ripe.A photo showing a corner of the garden that is mostly acorn winter squash, sugar baby watermelon, and green flesh honey dew vines. Beyond them are 4 bags that have potato plants growing in them. They are very green and leafy. They are late season russet potatoes planted from the pantry sprouts. There are a few petunias in gallon pots to their right and a hollyhock by the gate post.Cucumbers on a 10-line cattle panel trellis growing in a 9x3x1 foot metal raised bed. The cucumbers have reached the top of the trellis which is about 6 feet in the air and are growing sideways when not trying to grow up further. There are many blossoms on the plants. There are some hollyhocks in view on either side and beyond.

Some general garden goings-on. The orange cherry tomatoes are abundant but the plant not so much. The potatoes are starting to bloom. The determinate tomatoes are a hedge. There are hollyhocks everywhere and the runner beans are surviving the heat.

A cherry tomato plant that is less than 2 feet tall, hasn't grown enough to reach the trellis, but has 2-3 dozen tomatoes on it. There is one orange tomato which will be picked tomorrow. There is a g-type rotating head sprinkler to the right of the plant that is attached to a 1/4 inch and then a 1/2 inch poly pipe that has a blue stripe. The ground is covered by woven poly ground cover.Four re-used feed sacks with potatoes planted in them. They are at varying heights and the third from the left that is the tallest is starting to bloom. There are some hollyhocks and morning glory beyond them along with a fence and lots of grass tall and short.A 9x3x1 raised metal bed with tomatoes planted in it. They are very heavy with foliage and cannot be seen through. There are marigolds and zinnias blooming along the near edge of the bed. There are hollyhocks close to the photographer that are red, some farther away that are red and white with a carpet of strawberry plants covering the ground around them. In the middle of the photo are runner beans on a 10-line cattle panel trellis topped with some wood sticks to extend it up higher. There are many scarlet colored flowers are the runner beans.

Some of the runner beans have made it to the top of the trellis and are reaching for the sky. This is about 7 feet high, or 2 meters.

Runner bean shoots that are above a stick that is the top of the trellis structure for them. They will eventually lay over and work back into the trellis on the way down. There is blue sky behind them, a thin line intersects the blue sky, it is a copper wire.

The scarlet runner beans might make a meal before the heatwave puts a stop to new beans.

A cropped closeup photo of scarlet runner bean plants with beans growing. The biggest might be cheap skinny wood pencil sized. One bean is somewhat in focus.A cropped closeup photo of the galvanizing on a 10-line cattle panel used as a trellis for scarlet runner bean plants that have new beans growing on them. You can see the fine detail of the hot dipped zinc and the color variation with zinc oxide present. It is a double loop of wire with the ends twisted together and bent back to the loop to keep the gardener less injured from sharp things. It is partially obscured by out of focus bean things. Here we can see the rich dark green color of the scarlet runner bean leaf after a week or two or warm weather. The pale green from the cool late spring has been replaced. It is partially obscured by some out of focus beans.

Picked the orange Flamme tomato today and a few orange cherry. Runner beans are blooming and not looking pale now that it's warmed up. Some of the new earliglow strawberries have blossoms, and there were some bees in the garden.

Found a pair of squash bugs on an acorn squash plant too.

There are a few bean leaves and a background of strawberry plants and dry grass stubble.A single strawberry plant with a single blossom up high on a long stem or runner. The background is woven poly ground cover material.Marigold flowers and a honey bee flying between them. The marigolds are dark red with some orange and the bee is a dark colored one. There is an unopened flower bud next to the flying bee between the flowers. The background is all lush green marigold foliage.

5 pairs of runner beans planted and the first harvest of the year, a volunteer radish that was in the dirt pile. A spicy salad.

A volunteer radish, it is pink like one of the easter egg radishes but bigger like it's crossed with something. It has the leaves and roots attached. It is on a Gate post capped with a piece of shaped wood.5 planted runner beans which are two plants from each container. They are growing below 10-line cattle panels and between white strawberries that are taking over everything.

Picked most of the dry-ish scarlet runner beans I could find. Weather forecast looks like the rest might get a chance to mature some more before any chance of frost in a couple of weeks, and get dry beans from those. I've never cooked 'fresh' whole beans other than what's in the too big for green bean ones somtimes, might try that since there are so many.

A photo of scarlet runner bean pods that are drying out. Most are tan colored, one is very light green still. They are sitting on a green 3D printed honeycomb stencil.

Second scarlet runner bean harvest of the year.

The small beans are from the front yard, based on north american scarlet bean genetics bred for flowers. The large beans are from the backyard and based on european scarlet bean genetics bred for food.

There are still a bunch more green pods, hopefully will ripen before the killing frosts.

12 beans harvested this year in total. Still hoping to get up over 30, which is how many were planted. Many did not succeed, have about 3 out of 30 bean plants that produced pods able to reach maturity. So the plants coming from these seeds should have much better production rates. Though will also save the tubers for replanting next year.

They say it can take 5 years to naturalize and learn to grow a crop effectively, certainly are on the way. Hopefully within next few years will be able to produce enough to have some for eating.

These ones were grown on sandy loam, but need to also grow them on silt/clay, as that is quite common around here.

First Scarlet Runner Bean harvest of the year. Got five beans from two pods. These are classic scarlet runner variety.
Still have a bunch ripening on the vine. Am hoping to get at least 30 or 40 seeds so can end with at least as many as I started with.

It's still worth it if not so many, as I can still dig up the tubers in the autumn and replant after last frost. And the seeds that have matured are at least a little more naturalized than the other ones i had before.

I know many did not succeed due to insect pressure, or if they couldn't handle growing in a polyculture. Yet some got by unscathed. And it is the successful ones which produced flowers/pods/seeds.

So I organized my Smilyan Phaseolus coccineus into 5 subtypes by appearance. There is the ones which are pink or brown with large dark area, those are the standard scarlet runner beans.

Then there are the white variety which is the white dutch variety.

Then there is the ones which are pink or brown with red or brown stripes. That is the striped runner variety.

Then there are two unique variants. Three all black beans, I'm thinking of calling obsidian variety.

And some mostly red with white stripes, I'm thinking of calling granite.

In all should be able to make 5 plots, each at least 6 meters away from the others. And plant each variety with those which are similar to it.

Then once they bear fruit, can see which are best tasting. And sell them. I know that there is relatively little selection of phaseolus coccineus on Etsy. Mostly just the run of the mill scarlet emperor and pink lady. No one i selling white dutch, or striped runner beans.

Having obsidian and granite can be interesting as well.
It may take a couple years to naturalize to the great lakes climate, but afterwards they should do quiet well.

Also can save the tubers of the best specimens and replant them in following years. Providing a mother plant, and extra good tuber producing genes.

The tuber based mother plants should have a head start over the the seedling plants, and help provide long life genes and those which are good for many different years. I think there is a certain wisdom they will gain they can pass on to their children.
