#ArtAdventCalendar, Day 3. Rainbow mitochondria in watercolor, 2025 #sciart

Brightly colored mitochondria in watercolor on a yellow background
2025-12-03

Day 3 #ArtAdventCalendar & #WIPWednesday • I'm currently working on a #SciArt #anatomy #embroidery about the scars and moles on my belly. I have the main body parts stitched in black on black and am working on the Milky Way to represent my hysterectomy scar.

Lia’s fingers show a wooden embroidery hoop with black linen with a rectangle of dissolvable material on which is printed the Milky Way in black and white with some red and blue markings. Some tiny single strand seed stitch and French knots in white, peach, oranges, and dark browns and grays have been stitched. Below the Milky Way is black on black whipped backstitch that looks a bit like flames, it’s pubic hair. An hourglass-shaped needle minder that reads “this is taking forever” is attached to the cloth.

Day 3: Kentrosaurus

Gave nighttime coloring a stab for this big critter — otherwise I am going to end up with a lot of green jungle-dwellers in this set

#ArtAdventCalendar #art #digitalart #paleoart #dinosaur #SciArt #paleontology #stegosaurus #mastoArt #creativeToots

Digital cel-shaded art of a kentrosaurus, a stegosaur notable for two big spikes poking out of its shoulders. The kentrosaurus browses an ancient African jungle at night under the light of a crescent moon. It leans against a cycad while perched on an isometric, square chunk of forest earth with trailing roots. Everything is painted with stylized blue and teal tones. The moonlight catches briefly on the kentrosaurus’s spines. Watermark on the image: http://hmcgill.art

It’s #InternationalDisabilitiesDay • I'm a disabled #embroidery artist. My work combines anatomy & symptomatology into #SciArt. Here is body map (2016) in which I stitched my #MECFS symptoms as I felt them.

To learn more about my work, Here’s a recent interview: substack.com/home/post/p-16574

An outline of a naked woman is embroidered on linen in the same bone white colour as the linen. She stands legs together, her right hand covering her groin, her left hand, palm up, extended slightly to her side. She looks to the right. Her entire body except for her belly is covered in intricate markings representing different neurological sensations. Her face is a mask of green lines, feathery grey lines cover her shoulders and chest. There is a thick band of intricate burgundy stitching around her waist. Her forearms and hands are covered in thick blue undulant lines. Her right leg has bands of burgundy along the muscles, with small dots around them. Her inner left leg has a thick line of blue running up it, with thin branches spreading towards her outer leg.

Detox Doodles!

This is one of a series of daily sketches that I've been doing to curb my mindless scrolling!

This page is all about donkeys!

Sketchbook page of 6 donkey sketches in green pen. The top of the page has text that reads 6/26/25 Donkey. The top left is a donkey sitting and the words I Sits! Top right is a baby donkey in profile walking and a donkey face sticking its tongue out and the word Blep. Bottom left is a large drawing of a mama donkey caressing her baby who is sitting in the grass with the words Mama Love and a heart. To the right is a closeup of a donkey looking at the viewer with the word Henlo and a heart.

Day 3 of #artAdventCalendar: another new portrait - geochemist Katsuko Saruhashi (1920-2007) who created tools that allowed her to make 1st measurements of CO2 in seawater, raised the alarm about nuclear fallout, tracing it in oceans & researched peaceful uses of nuclear power. A supporter of women in science, she established the Society of Japanese Women Scientists & the Saruhashi Prize for 🧵

#printmaking #sciart #womenInSTEM #climateChange #oceanography #linocut #mastoArt

Printed in a gradient of dark blue-green at the bottom through dark blue to light blue at the top, this is my 9.25” x 12.5” portrait of Japanese geochemist in the lab adjusting a round bottomed flask with other posts and an array of chemical glassware in the foreground. In the background are carved ocean waves so the top looks like sky over wavy ocean

For today's #ArtAdventCalendar I present: all the bees I painted last year for the first annual #Septembee, a self-made challenge in which I paint a new bee every day for a month. In 2024 I focused on bees found in Colorado.

Many watercolor bees, cut out and arranged on a black background. Showcases some of the diversity around Colorado.

I've got a few of these original hand-drawn small artworks in my shop now. The ants are saying "move slow and make wonderful things".

For today's #DecembArt post, I'm sharing my embroidered Cell diagram. I did this one in glow-in-the-dark thread, which kind of glowed. But not a lot. Still, it was fun to make.

If you'd like to join in for #DecembArt :
1. Post your own art (new or old)
2. Any medium (but no AI-slop)
3. Have fun!

Day 2: Diplocaulus

One of my personal favorites! I love this guy’s head. If he existed I would have to make friends with someone who owned one so I could look at it every day.

#ArtAdventCalendar #paleoart #art #digitalart #SciArt #amphibian #mastoart #creativetoots #paleontology

Digital cel-shaded art of a diplocaulus, which is an ancient amphibian with a wide, boomerang-shaped head. The diplocaulus is depicted underwater in some kind of pond, floating over a chunk of pond dirt that contains underwater plans and fallen fern leaves dissolving into green muck. The animal has orange spots on its dark green skin, and the light of water overhead dances across its form.

Day 2 #ArtAdventCalendar & #WomensBrainHealthDay • This #SciArt #symptomatology #embroidery is loosely based on a Ramon y Cajal drawing and depicts the electrical fog I feel in my brain due to #MECFS: she was tributaries (2016).

An embroidery on bone white linen. There are many coral-like neurons in the vague shape of a brain embroidered in shades of blue. The bottom section is navy blue and transitions to a lighter blue at the top. The text at the bottom reads: she was tributaries, all electric.

Day 2 #artAdventCalendar I made several portraits this year including Sophie Brahe (1559 or 1556 -1643) horticulturalist, astronomer, genealogist, & alchemist with the gardens at her brother #astronomer Tycho Brahe’s Uraniborg estate, where she often assisted his research, alchemical tools & illustrations of the supernova she observed as his assistant.

Tycho trained her in horticulture & chemistry but initially discouraged astronomy.🧵

#womenInSTEm #histsci #printerSolstice #sciart #mastoArt

My 11” x 14” linocut portrait of Sophie Brahe, a Renaissance aristocrat in headgear, ruff, dark clothing with medallion on a wide band and a long scarf or other thin fabric draped over her shoulders with her hands folded in front of her and alchemical vessels, printed in dark bronze ink, on a bronze background. In green behind her head is a map of the gardens at Uranienborg, with her head at the centre of the diamond shaped pale green knot garden (geometric planned gardens). This is surrounded by an orchard in darker green with semicircle bump outs on each side of the diamond. The stars of Cassiopeia from De stelle nova are printed in gold on top of everything; there are stars across her chest and ruff and in the garden and the large supernova is above her head
