SECONDARY's more an "MC vs world" story, but there are people who have it out for Jim. He's got only one friend in the sanitarium he lands in. Some other patients try to rough him up - they have a weird (by our world's standards) demeanor; more animated, but also deeper-pitched.
The guards... they just bark orders. Or laugh at the patients harassing him.

Chapter 7 - "Pursuit"
Namor Skenn is running, and he has a small fleet of sapacqs (bounty hunters) desperately trying to claim the kill fee on him. He's only a few jumps away from safety, but the mob after his blood is growing and now the most feared of all sapacqs has joined them, Mira Candor. Someone that even an agent as ruthless as Skenn knows to be wary of.

[1] It won't surprise you to hear that men used formal address a lot more than women did. I've taken the liberty of transliterating the formal as ‘thou’ and the informal as ‘you’–even though in the original history, it was actually the other way around. But ‘thou’ just sounds more formal to a modern English speaker–and since I'm the only one left, I get to pick.

Chapter 6 - "Suspicious Minds"
Captain Carl Schafer and Commander Ellen Voight are assigned the task of meeting with the Teel Corporation defector and learn that this Namor Skenn has a well-deserved notoriety among intelligence circles. Schafer laments the idea of granting such an amoral individual citizenship, but appreciates the strategic necessity of such deals.
