Reducing greenhouse gases and ozone-depleting chemicals, which increase UV exposure, are key to protecting eye health at a global level. But even under the best climate scenarios, intense climate-driven heat, droughts and other eye irritants will continue to affect people. knowablemagazine.org/content/a #KnowableMagazine #ScienceMastodon #ClimateChange

Viruses are important causes of disease and death in humans worldwide — and understanding how viruses contribute to chronic disease is essential to developing preventive strategies.

That's where virologists are well-positioned to contribute, write Annual Review of Virology editors Terence S. Dermody and Julie K. Pfeiffer in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

143mio EUR for 2087 project proposals with approx. 3mio each. That means a funding rate of 2.2% or a reject rate of 97.8%.

What a waste of resources, so many excellent proposals will be rejected. Science funding has to be organized differently. This is so frustrating, I already regret to have spent so much time on the proposal.
And the @EUeic even boasts the many submissions. But that is only the accumulated resubmissions of excellent proposals that were rejected in previous years.

For many people, bed bugs are becoming a fact of life again, much as they used to be throughout humanity’s history.

But as scientists race to find new strategies to combat these pests — everything from microfabrications that entrap the insects to fungal spores that invade and kill them — they also learn more about the often bizarre biology of bed bugs, which might one day reveal the parasite’s Achilles heel.
