A walk through Huis ter Heide & Bosrijk

A few days ago, my wife Christel and I wandered through the northern part of Huis ter Heide, bordering the Efteling Bosrijk. The air was calm, soft clouds drifted by, and sunlight occasionally broke through — just enough to paint the forest in warm tones.

While walking, I noticed a flawless Imleria badia — known as the Bay Bolete or “Kastanjeboleet” in Dutch. It stood proud among fallen leaves, its chestnut-brown cap glistening slightly from the forest’s moisture. This species plays an essential role in the ecosystem, forming symbiotic mycorrhizal bonds with trees like pines and beeches, exchanging nutrients that keep forests thriving.

Later, Christel spotted a red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris), poised on a wooden fence, turning its head just as she clicked the shutter on our Canon 5D Mark IV with the Sigma 100–400mm. That curious glance over its shoulder made the shot come alive — pure serendipity.

We ended our walk at Klaas Vaak Lake, where the houses of Efteling Bosrijk mirrored perfectly in the still water. The reflections of reds, greens, and browns looked like a painter’s palette — a calm, storybook ending to a wonderful day outdoors.

A Whisper in the Canopy – Meeting the European Red Squirrel

Yesterday, while taking a quiet forest stroll, I heard rustling above. My eyes followed a shadow with a long, bushy tail descending the tree—it was the European red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris, rode Europese eekhoorn). I switched to my Canon 5D Mark III with the Sigma 100–400mm lens and managed to capture a candid moment—though the shutter noise likely startled this curious little fellow.

Red squirrels are diurnal and primarily arboreal, foraging for seeds, nuts, fungi, and occasionally eggs. As scatter-hoarders, they play a crucial ecological role—burying seeds that can grow into new trees when forgotten. These creatures breed twice a year (Feb–Mar and May–Aug), with typically 3–7 offspring per litter. Though adults can live up to 6–7 years, most survive only 2–4 years in the wild.

Spotting this squirrel in the early morning light—especially right where the jays were playing—felt like nature’s quiet encore. It reminded me how vibrant and vital our local forests are, even in subtle, fleeting moments.

I debated with myself about whether or not to post this photo. I decided for it because this is part of nature as well. The hawk did not kill the squirrel out of malice – it's got its own chicks to feed, and I don't want to see them starve. I enjoy photographing both Eurasian goshawks and red squirrels. But do I want to get them in the same photo? Yeah, it'll most likely be something like this.

Two days ago I visited the local goshawk nest to see how the pair was doing. The female was at the nest, and I took a couple of bad photos of it through the branches and then left it in peace. The male should be easier to photograph, I thought. I know from which direction it likes to approach the nest, so I decided to "ambush" it. A while later I heard a thud and its call.

My heart skipped a few beats: "It landed right behind me..."

I turned around slowly, and there it was. It called the female, presumably to let it know that dinner was coming.

Yes, the Eurasian red squirrel (*Sciurus vulgaris*) is mid-jump, with its front paws lifted off the ground and its hind legs pushing off. Its body is stretched forward, and its bushy tail is extended behind for balance. The squirrel is moving across a dense layer of cracked walnut shells. The natural outdoor setting features patches of grass, dirt, scattered twigs, and the base of a large tree in the background.

Enjoying a sugar hit, I see. Our local Norway maples and silver birches have started to produce sap, but I don't think I have ever seen a red squirrel licking it off the trunk of a maple before. I remember eating a maple sap icicle I found when I was kid. Have you tasted birch or maple sap?

My weather app is inept... no, what I wanted to say is, I went to the bigger park with my full sized (and heavy) camera and a tele lens, to photograph squirrels. I hoped for the light drizzle to stop, since no rain was predicted.
I still placed the camera into a plastic bag, and had a soft waterproof blanket with me (took it to cushion the camera in my paper-thin collapsible backpack).
The rain only got stronger, but despite it, I met two squirrels, and even gained the experience of photographing from under a blanket.
The weather app denied the rain existence the whole way.
