Word choice matters when localizing a or . Localization of such a creative work should preserve and convey the experience and nature of the , , and characters.

Yes, I notice when captions are more interpretations than verbatim translations for languages I understand. With captioning on such productions, there are occasions to learn helpful English words I might not otherwise encounter — words like “scree” and “transhumance”.

When I'm working on a script, I like to attack the editing through the spectrum of emotional states. Write when you're happy, sad, excited, lethargic, pissed off, etc. For me, sprinkling in all the myriad perspectives lets me discover deeper moments in the story. #screenplay #writing #script #film

The screenplay for "Lost in Translation" is probably scene-to-scene with the movie (it's been a while), but Sophia Coppola knew what she wanted to shoot, so it's not surprising. The language is terse and it reads very well. I didn't see Bill Murray or Scarlett Johansson during the reading. Or at least, not that much. It impressed me that all the songs are part of the script, not a realisation-time or later addition. Sophia Coppola really knew what she wanted.

I was actually curious how the script for "No Country For Old Men" would fare compared to the book. The book is better. The writing is actually surprisingly bland, but maybe brothers Coen was writing for themselves and they didn't need to impress anyone with it. There aren't many deviations from the movie, apart from a couple of things that were actually in the book, but were cut out of the screenplay. They ended up in the movie in the end.

If your TV show or movie has a character say, “keep your phone on and charged,” but earlier you had a character find a bunch of cell phones hidden long-term in a hidden wall compartment they could turn on and they’re charged, you broke your world.

Either phones need charge or they don’t. 😝

The screenplay for "Looper" felt better than the movie, but I saw the movie very long time ago, so I take it with a grain of salt (I was, for instance, very strict about time-travelling rules back then). It read a bit like a future-noir kind of story. The foreword mentions that the order in the actual movie was changed for the pacing reasons and maybe why it works so well in writing: it's more adjusted fot the medium.

I love #PlainTextAccounting but this week learnt there's also plain text #screenplay writing with the Fountain syntax:

fountain.io/

This syntax is already understood by FOSS writing tools such as Trelby:

trelby.org/

The perfect combo to ensure that movie you're writing will still be readable by future civilizations.

If you can't name the first woman to fly solo around the world, this post is for you:

Found another old box of archived papers full of my attempt to write the #screenplay "Three-Eight Charlie" between 2002 and about 2009.

Jerrie Mock was the solo pilot, becoming an "Earthrounder" in her 1953 Cessna 180 "Spirit of Columbus".

In this box was a July 1964 copy of Flying Magazine covering her flight.

1,000s of hours (and $$$) later, I never could sell the project to Hollywood.

Researching for a screenplay.

Did you know the Royal Canadian Air Force has fighters that have a radar cross section from the front that may be comparable to the F-35’s stealthy cross section, and have a combat radius of > 300 miles (~482km)?

Did you know they have stand-off munitions that can allow them to strike targets from more than 80 miles (128km) away?

Did you know Washington, DC is less than 380 miles (612km) from the Canadian border?
