#ScribesAndMakers Nov 24. If you're a coder, do you also code in your spare time? If you're not a coder, would you want to learn how if you had the time?

I would like to learn how to muck around in Linux, things like config files. There's so much you can do with those! I'm not getting all the use out of my computer that I could.

#PennedPossibilities 854 — What genres might you try outside of your chosen one(s)? Is there anything specific you would like to work on?

I think I'd like to write a love story; I fear that it would be a self-indulgent fantasy.

#PennedPossibilities 853. Antagonist POV: Which do you prefer, sunrise or sunset?

She looks at you like you must be slow, says, "I have work to do," and walks away.

#PennedPossibilities 851 MC POV: Is there a secret spot you like to retreat to? If there is, why that spot?

"There's nowhere I'm safe, here."

#ScribesAndMakers Nov 23: what's the lowest number of readers/viewers/users of your creative work that you would consider cause for celebration?

Years ago, I discovered that there was a discussion board full of RPG players who were using my free/libre manual, Phoenix Project. There was maybe a dozen or so people, but that made me feel pretty damn good.

#ScribesAndMakers Nov 22: You're in a cabin where your supplies are limited to a can of soup, a length of rope, a broken hatchet, and a cast iron skillet. How did you get there?

My wife and I planned a trip with the kids, and we were forced (ugh!) to use AirBNB; aka, "unregulated hotels." We arrive in the cabin, and that's all we find. Thank fuck we brought supplies or else our children would mutiny.

#ScribesAndMakers Nov 21: Do you ever change what you're wearing to do your creative work?

If I'm wearing the shirt I had on for a work day (of teaching), I'll change into a t-shirt.

#WordWeavers Nov 24: What's the strangest animal product your MCs eat?

Bugs. It's 150 years in the future. Most of my characters live in arcologies and grow their own food hydroponically. Meat is way too labour intensive for that, but dried, ground-up cricket make a fine protein source.

#WordWeavers Nov 21: Is writing an escape for you, or does stress make it hard to write?

Yes. Writing helps me get out of the terrifying world we live in, and it's hard to write when I'm filled with that terror. It's both.

#WritersCoffeeClub Nov 23: What's your niche?

Doing SFF for people with progressive values. There's a streak of conservatism running through SFF (and horror, and other "genres"), and I think we need to push back against it.

#WritersCoffeeClub 22 Nov. What has been the biggest change to your style since you started out?

Maybe honesty? The first few things I wrote had a touch of goofiness to them and didn't reflect me personally except in terms of presumptions about how the world *really* works. The thing I'm working on right now is really personal.

#WritersCoffeeClub Nov. 21: What are some preconceptions about writers you'd like to see challenged?

That art *must* come from pain. That "great" artists "get to be" assholes. That chasing previous successful formulas is the way forward. That you have to remove what makes you unique to sell books: race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, sexuality, gender identity, class, etc.

Okay, I'm coming to you all for help. I've been reading the first draft of my novel, and it's filling me with dread. I know that's part of the process, but the specific problem I'm having is bc of how I wrote it--in short stints over the course of two+ years. It has not ~flow~. Each scene feels disconnected from the last. It's choppy as hell.

#PennedPossibilities 850 - What is your least favourite part of being a writer?

The part where I work and work and work, and the results are only okay.

(My first draft sucks, friends. It really sucks.)

#WritersCoffeeClub Nov. 20: How did you find your writerly voice?

I wrote academic work for 20 years and taught composition, which means I am very aware of the mechanics of tone and rhetoric. I can tell you *why* a sentence is bland vs. exciting. Then, I spent 10 years doing play-by-post D&D: an hour every single day of writing "adventure fiction." I didn't find *a* voice. I found dozens of voices.

#WordWeavers 20 Nov: Has the Covid pandemic affected how or where you write?

I think I'm a lot more inclined to stay at home after all that time at home. It's hard to say what the effects are on me personally when it was a literally global trauma--and when I got the least of it, to be clear.

#WritersCoffeeClub Nov 19 - What's something (even if fantastical!) which could improve your process?

The ability to stop time as needed, or possibly the ability to go without sleep.

In the real world, the Mac version of Scrivener on a Linux machine would be awesome. Sigh.
