Mangrove roots, seen underwater, with dappled sunlight on the seabed. Mudskippers and fiddler crabs climb on the roots. New shoots grow up from the seabed, where we see a chocolate-chip starfish, and horseshoe crabs. New roots grow down towards the seabed, and we see the interface where air and water meet. Many small fish are seen amid the mangroves, where they shelter, feed and grow.

A seagrass-scape, seen mostly from underwater, but with a large white female flower on the surface at top left, as sometimes seen at low tide. The little white dots floating around it are detached male flowers, and the round edible fruit is seen at bottom right. The seagrass species shown include those known colloquially as ribbon, fibre-strand, spoon, fern, and sickle, according to their various leaf shapes. Noble volute can be seen, and a thorny sea cucumber glimpsed.

The vibrant colors and varied shapes of a healthy reef, with corals, sponges and anemones. A turtle is visible in the distance, beyond a natural arch and gorgonian fan. A lone clown anemone fish looks out: have his family disappeared to the aquarium trade?

Dugong life near a big city

They "found heavy metals, pesticides, microplastics and herbicides in the tissue and circulating blood of Moreton Bay dugongs. Extreme weather can compound these urban risks.

"We know that with every flood event or cyclone there's direct damage to seagrass beds. Even if there is enough seagrass to eat, dugongs are still affected. They show increased levels of heavy metals, pathogens and microplastics after floods, and "there is a drop in body condition compared to that time in other years."

"...This population may be faring better than those further north. They're exposed to agricultural runoff, which could severely affect the dugongs".

Project to restore 'vital' #seagrass around #Scotland

"A £2.4m seagrass planting programme has been launched to help restore the plant in seas around the north of Scotland.

"The project aims to plant 14 hectares (34.6 acres) of seagrass, often described as a 'wonder plant' by conservationists, over the next three years.

"Seagrasses are often likened to rainforests because they provide food and shelter for thousands of species, but they have been declining globally since the 1930s.

"In the last century 92% of the plants have been lost from Britain's coasts and areas once covered by seagrass are now 'lifeless seabeds', according to research by University College London.

"The new initiative is a partnership between the Scottish Marine Environmental Enhancement Fund (#SMEEF) and Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN).

"Grants have been awarded to four organisations that cover areas from #Shetland to the #Kintyre peninsula.

"These are #MossyEarth's #WilderFirths project (based around the Black Isle), Kintyre Coastal Network's East Kintyre Biosphere, Wester Ross Fisheries Trust's seagrass planting project and Restoring Shetland's Marlie Meadows - a project by the University of the #Highlands and Islands.

"Seagrass is home to a vast number of species, and is a food source for many others.

"It can purify water and slow down waves, protecting coastal areas from flooding as a result.

"The plant also takes in #CO2, making it useful in tackling #ClimateChange.

"The partnership said Scottish seas are a special place for marine habitats like seagrass, with the country's coasts stretching 18,000km (11,185 miles) and containing 8,000 species or more."
