So the German Foreign Office issued basically the following statement on #May8th:

"Our historic responsibility for the Shoa- the betrayal of all civilised values- and the remembrance of the millions of victims of the #SecondWorldWar unleashed by #NaziGermany gives rise to our obligation to resolutely defend peace and corporate interest in #Europe today." 2/2

Happy Victory Day, 8 May, 2025. Today marks 80 years since the Allied victory in Europe over fascism and Nazism in World War II.

A slight deviation from the usual #JackAndMaryArchive this morning to mark the 80th anniversary of #VEDay.

This photo was taken around a week before VE Day and shows German soldiers crossing the Elbe river as they surrender to British forces towards the end of #WorldWar2.

I was first shown this photo in the form of a newspaper clipping where a name had been written in biro above a soldier's head: Bob Hearn, my paternal grandfather. There he is, sitting on the back of a Jeep looking directly at the camera with the cheeky looking half smile that appears in other photos in the family archive.

I've written a whole blog post about my wartime ancestors (https://cjhearn.co.uk/blog/ancestors-at-war) and that also includes how I managed to track down this higher resolution copy which now hangs with pride on my office wall.

#OnThisDay in 1942, Admiral Syfret accepted the formal surrender of the French forces in Diego Suarez. The next day, Churchill sent a note to 29th Independent Infantry Brigade, whom he had observed in training some months before. He wrote, "I was sure when I saw you at Inverary nine months ago that the 29th Brigade Group would make its mark."

#OnThisDay in 1942, the Allied invasion of #Madagascar began on the west coast. The defenders there were unable to report this to their higher command because Percy Mayer, an #SOE agent, had cut telephone cables.

I'll be giving a talk about the invasion at #WeHaveWaysFest in September.

Second day, of three, in #Normandy. It takes time to digest the scale of the Operation Overlord, the Wall of the Atlantic, and the brutal consequences of the Battle of Normandy. One thing is to read about it, for many years. Another, to see its remnants. #SecondWorldWar #WWII #Drone #Photography

“As a former #Spitfire #pilot who flew 60 missions over #Nazi-occupied Europe during the #SecondWorldWar, George Brewster is not one to be rattled easily. But he says experiencing the warmth and gratitude of the #Dutch people … has left him speechless.” www.cbc.ca/news/world/r...

"We may allow ourselves a brief period of rejoicing..." (Churchill, on VE Day)

The 8th of May will mark 80 years since Victory in Europe was declared, after a back-breaking, titanic struggle by the generations who came before us, to crush the horrendous evil of the Nazi regime.

History to be remembered.
