On 24 May 1988 the Local Government Act 1988 including Section 28 came into effect. Section 28 was a legislative designation for a series of laws across Britain that prohibited the "promotion of homosexuality" by local authorities. It caused many organisations such as lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender student support groups to close, limit their activities or self-censor. #OnThisDay, 23 May 1988, four women storm the BBC news studio whilst the news is live on air, protesting the introduction of Section 28. Section 28 banned the “promotion of homosexuality” by local government in the UK, and was intended to stop LGBT+ campaigns for equal rights.

It was not repealed until 2003.

@kibcol1049 kinda how the amount of Queer kids exploded when we were allowed to be Queer kids. That was after me unfortunately, Section 28 told me I was sick and wrong for being Bi. I look at queer kids being themselves now (when they aren't being attacked online) and see what was stolen from me by bigotry.
