More than half of the trees I've planted are grown from seed, I guesstimate.

Hundreds of trees, dozens of species of tree seeds grown over the last 8 years. Sooo worth the wait...

My heart is overjoyed! 💚🍑🙏🏼🤗

Apple tree varieties have some wild names

Photo looking down on a stump of a young apple tree, labelled "Bloody Butcher", growing from graft stock, poking through a circular hole in Mypex. The label, a plant passport, also includes the Latin name Malus Domestica and the owner, Irish Seed Savers Association.

Spent a few days tending to grafted apple trees on a friend's farm in County Clare. Thousands of trees meant thousands of weeds, and this was my favourite of them all 🌱

A muddy garden glove holds up a tiny young nettle, the size of a thumbnail, plucked from a plot of young apple trees. A clump of moss came up with the nettle and was replaced on the soil. Out of focus on the ground is an L-shaped spike with a wooden handle, which I used for weeding.

My Shrine Of Ceres, part of the Biodiversity Shrine Project. A two-part shrine in the shape of Gothic church windows, built three-dimensionally from cardboard painted white with gesso. On the left, an embroidered ear of grain on blue fabric. On the right, a real one on golden fabric. Decorated with folklore braids and showing traditional Ukrainian embroidery patterns with tree-of-life symbols.

It's #SeedTapping / #SeedsCollecting time. My #liatris & #zinnias have gone to seed. I'm collecting their #seeds to save, to share & to plant next year, in new spots around the backyard.

@willelm fun? I’m way past having fun … #SeedSavers #seed savers Ireland if I’m sober enough to link it - I’ve seedbombs of native seeds. Judicial approach is important. Thanks for your reply.

Do you save seeds? Your efforts will most likely not involve anything like this level of sacrifice to save seeds during Russia's tumultuous 20th century (via @mariapopova):

Was bedeutet Open Source Saatgut und was ist der Unterschied zu kommerziellen Sorten? Kann man Pflanzen aus Resten ziehen und Saatgut ernten? Im Topf oder im Beet? Und was ist, wenn man auf einmal zu viele Tomaten hat?

Bettina Neuhaus hat auf dem CCC Camp im August einen super Vortrag für Einsteigende in diese Thematik gehalten! Ihr könnt ihn hier nachhören bzw. sehen:

@Shanmonster They are lovely beans. We have Hidatsa Sheild beans to harvest. The heirloom varieties are wonderful. #Minnesota, #SeedSaver, #SeedSavers.

My parents’ garden failed this year. This is devastating because they are poor and rely on their crops to feed themselves and their chickens. What are some good heirloom tomato and zucchini varieties to grow in PEI? It’s a high-wind area, so pole varieties won’t work. Black Russian tomatoes did well for them in prior years, but not this time. I need to send them new seeds for next year. At least they have a good crop of beans. #SeedSaver #SeedSavers #homesteading #FoodSovereignty #CropFailure #Gardening #FoodShouldBeFree #IndigenousFoodSovereignty @IndigenousFoodSov
