The trees grow up through small holes in long dark strips of Mypex, a woven polypropylene weed suppressor. The strips are about a metre across and narrow to a point in the distance. Each is separated by a strip of grass for access. Thin green mesh fencing, supported by thick wooden stakes, separates the trees into several sets. It's early evening, I've just finished a day of weeding, and the sun behind me casts long shadows ahead.

Spent a few days tending to grafted apple trees on a friend's farm in County Clare. Thousands of trees meant thousands of weeds, and this was my favourite of them all 🌱

A muddy garden glove holds up a tiny young nettle, the size of a thumbnail, plucked from a plot of young apple trees. A clump of moss came up with the nettle and was replaced on the soil. Out of focus on the ground is an L-shaped spike with a wooden handle, which I used for weeding.

My parents’ garden failed this year. This is devastating because they are poor and rely on their crops to feed themselves and their chickens. What are some good heirloom tomato and zucchini varieties to grow in PEI? It’s a high-wind area, so pole varieties won’t work. Black Russian tomatoes did well for them in prior years, but not this time. I need to send them new seeds for next year.
