The out-of-focus background is the lower slopes of a hill on the other side of the Ettrick Valley, covered on woodland and grassed areas.

Back to typing up newspaper references to the German accordionist and tuner I found travelling around mid/late 19th century Scotland. Have now typed up 240/276 newspaper references to him. Here is one just typed, from Selkirk in 1859. I will be writing this all up as an academic journal paper soon. #accordion #squeezebox #music #Scotland #Selkirk #newspapers

Part of a newspaper page. Here is the text of the report. "HERR YUNG's CONCERT - This talented musician gave a concert in the Freemasons' Hall here, on Tuesday evening, when he was assisted by Mr Thomas Young, of Galashiels, and Mr J. Horsburgh, of Selkirk. Of Herr Yung's abilities as an accordionist it would be difficult to speak in too high terms. His execution is as nearly perfect as can be conceived; and all the pieces were rendered with admirable taste. The delicacy and purity of tone which he produces from his favourite instrument is something altogether different from the somewhat harsh tones of the accordion in the hands of an ordinary performer. The vocal part of the entertainment devolved principally upon Mr Young, many of whose songs were well given. Mr Horsburgh was by no means so successful in his efforts as his previous appearances led us to expect, and the effect of his songs was greatly married by the feeling of trepidation from which he seemed unable to escape. The concert, as a whole, seemed to give general satisfaction, and we have no doubt that the impression produced by Herr Yung's performances will ensure for him a much larger audience on his next visit."

A Red-Legged Partridge, perched on a wall on Selkirk Hill, Scottish Borders. (2025.03.15)
#Partridge #Selkirk #ScottishBorders #Birds #SelkirkHill
An image in landscape format: the left-hand bottom two-thirds of the frame shows a Red-legged Partridge perched on the top of a grey lichen-encrusted drystane dyke. The partridge is viewed partly from the front but mainly side-on, facing right but with the head turned slightly to look at the camera. They are typically about 32-34cm in length; it has pinkish/grey/brown upperparts and crown, boldly striped black, white and chestnut flanks, a chestnut belly, and white chin and throat bordered with black, with black spotting spreading like a necklace on a whitish breast, and a red beak and feet.
It'a a dull day; the slightly out-of-focus background is a typical farm wooden post-and-wire fence, with taller steel-mesh fencing attched in front; beyond that, low rough light-green grass and faded taller decayed high grass stalks.

A Song Thrush, The Haining, Selkirk, Scottish Borders. (2025.02.27)
#SongThrush #Birds #TheHaining #Selkirk #ScottishBorders
A telephoto shot of a song thrush on a grassy area littered with tree debris (leaves, twigs) and small stones. The thrush occupies two-thirds of the left side of the frame, viewed from the front and side, facing to the right but staring at the photographer, and standing leaning forward on quite spindly-looking legs, sprerad wide. A song thrush is about 23cm long, with a relatively short tail, medium brown upperparts and small black/dark brown spots all over a buff breast and flanks. It was grubbing for insects in the grass before it was so rudely interrupted by the photographer! The areas in front of and behind the thrush are out-of-focus.

View west from The Haining, Selkirk, Scottish Borders, across the Ettrick Valley, with (l-r) Fastheugh Hill (501m) and Newark Hill on the skyline. (2021.04.11)
#TheHaining #EttrickValley #Selkirk #ScottishBorders
A medium-telephoto landscape shot. An tall, ancient lichen-encrusted tree, catching the sunlight, occupies the left third of the image, its leafless branches obscuring the top two-thirds of the view beyond. In the rest of the image, the land drops away down to the floor of the Ettrick Valley (the Ettrick Water in not visible) over a green field crossed by some low-power electricity transmission lines, and mainly coniferous woodland in the shade, then climbs up (in sunshine) over green fields and coniferous woodland of various shades of grey-green and brown, to hills on the other side of the valley. The sky fills almost the top half of the image, mainly fair-weather cloud but with patches of blue.
