Hello anyone on fedi who knows about how to do web hosting 👋

I'm planning on setting up a domain and personal server for my website within the next year or so, but haven't found a resource that clicks yet. specifically I would like help with any of these questions:

1. when people talk about self-hosting, what do they mean? are they refering to hosting it on a remote network, on a local machine? what is self-hosting not?

2. whats the process from renting a domain name -> getting a simple http server serving files on it?

3. how do you do those subdomain thingies (eg a.host.domain, b.host.domain), is that the server's job?

4. how can you get both a static http server and a git interface that you can push to on different subdomains?

Where I'm at: know how to write/run server and client programs for LAN, can do html/css/js etc, learned about http headers but memory is hazy, heard of DNS and vaguely understand that its important

Does anyone have any handy guides for properly locking down a linux server used for hosting? I've been doing an okay job with mine but I think if anyone has a good guide about how to make sure I didn't miss anything, that would be nice!

It's primarily for web hosting, including fedi, and sometimes as a fallback matrix/chat thing. Boosts appreciated!

We're currently being billed AUD $ 6.33 monthly for a single vCore with 1GB of RAM

Needs: Shell access so we can run it how we want

Compromises: Something local to Australia would be nice but also it's not a /NEED/

Does anyone have a recommendation for a hosting provider who will let me:

1. Upload a .img file and use it in a new VM, and
2. Download the .img file when I’m done! No snapshots, backups, cloud dev files, dd rsync object storage bucket bullshit, I just want to grab the image file when I’m done. That’s it.

Probably only need it for a month or so
