#servo undercover web browser engine.

spacebar.news/servo-undercover

servo project changed priorities and are, for now, focusing on embedded.

#verso a web browser based on servo has been archived (put on pause) 3 months ago because they couldn't keep pace with servo's changes.

I hope there will be a resurgence of interest in 2026 for this web browser.

I've been tinkering on a Discord-inspired native #Matrix client on and off for the past three years. During this time it has gone back and forth between #Slint and #Dioxus, because Slint is always lacking one specific feature (this time rich text rendering, which is coming in the next release apparently) and Dioxus requires a fullblown webview. I finally got to try out the #Servo based modular dioxus-native / blitz and it works amazingly well for my existing dioxus code already!

@librecomms has been testing @servo & it seems to work well enough for a version 0.0.3 #demo 😜

@thelinuxexperiment

For the love of all that is good, *someone* PLEASE create a browser UI around Servo that is:

* #copyleft #FOSS
* Community governed
* Has daily testing packages
* Community funded non profit
* Avoids off device #AI
* Communicates clearly

I worked professionally with high profile #crowdfunding campaigns for years. I am 100% certain a campaign would go viral, with stretch goals blown away.

#Servo isn't feature complete, but many (me!) would 100% daily drive something alpha, buggy and missing features to build a better future. Hint: this is exactly what successfully launched FIrefox against #IE.

We need hope we can escape the sinking, Titanic shitopoly of #Chrome and #Firefox. We will rally around any principled alternative.

The problem with Mozilla is that the leadership is still not listening to the community and prioritizing irrelevant aspects of its products.

Firefox, a flagship Mozilla's product, could be a strong competitor to Chrome, Edge and other browsers if Mozilla would start taking care of what people think and what features they expect. Adding AI, without previously seeking the opinion of the community (it could be done even by simple poll), is a good example of it.

Nowadays, almost all browsers are adding AI chatbots or try to be "agentic browsers", which actually is more fancy name for data mining than offering convenience and security.

Mozilla, which could present alternative direction, is jumping on this ship, making community to be upset about it. Even if Mozilla would like to add AI features, it could do it more properly by making it as opt-out by default and informing the user about possibility to turn on such a feature.

Instead of pushing AI and trying to change itself into a company offering another AI browser, Mozilla should better allocate resources into development of Gecko or Servo (the latter seems to be soon supported by Huawei which wants to use it for its Huawei Browser). This would improve performance of Firefox and make the browser to be better for users.

I remember times when Firefox was great browser with good performance and focus on privacy. It represented a clear mission and vision of the Internet. I know that Mozilla is facing many issues, which also affect it financially, but the organization needs to work more with the community and to find its place among others.

I'm not going to recommend other browser in this post because it's not the point of it, but Mozilla lacks ideas on how to position itself. This would be a big problem sooner than later as organizations that don't know how to position themselves are always moving to a path of decline.

Mozilla still has some time to work on it, but the clock is ticking.

Just took a quick test run of #Servo on my #LinuxMint machine. They're definitely working on functionality before looks, but the few sites I tried ran well-ish. Tech.LGBT is fine as long as you never like, boost, or comment.

That said, it did like several games, (so, #Proton,) have done to me. Hard froze. I had to hold the power button down to turn it off and restart it.

So the potato is still rather raw. But I can see the baked potato within.

...Now I want a baked potato.

@fabi1cazenave Another important point is that everybody can act now to change the situation by making some regular donations now (web browser development requires lot of funds).

I would not suggest to donate to Firefox because your donation will finance the million salary of the the CEO of the Mozilla corp.

I personally prefer to found #Servo which has a proper foundation and is revived by @igalia. They already have experience with browser development as they participate to #Webkit .

@antoineturmel @fabi1cazenave

Ou utiliser #servo ? certes, le projet avait décidé de changer d'objectif et d'en faire une biblio plutôt qu'un navigateur mais la donne pourrait avoir changé.

i want #servo to succeed, mostly because then we'll finally have a good idea of whether it's possible to create and maintain an independent web browser engine without $Texas or if mozilla's involvement with google and a.i. companies was justified

I've just contributed to Servo. Consider supporting them too — every little helps! opencollective.com/servo

Quick PSA : yes, has been disappointing, but so far, they’re the only organization preventing Google to have a full control over web standards. Blink/WebKit-based browsers (Chromium, Vivaldi…) do NOT help at all in that regard.

So please use or a -based alternative (, …). Ride the nightly release train and report bugs if you can. is getting ready, but for the next ~5 years, Gecko is our only suitable option.
