Some remarks made at a recent presentation to a young girl, whose readiness, presence of mind, and skill in swimming saved a life, are worthy of consideration. Praise was given because her mind and muscle were both in order so that she was able to accomplish a great act. While giving every credit to the fine girl, it must be remembered that she must have been well brought up, both at home and at school, to be ready for such an emergency. It is a surprising thing that even in these new century days that there are women to be found whose sole contribution to an emergency is to scream…
… it is to be hoped that the “new girls” coming along as women to be will be on the fine lines of the lifesaver, and not on those of the screamer.…
