jobs demoing a codeless UI using NeXT/OpenStep's Interface Builder at macworld expo in 1997

making games in Adventure Game Studio taught me how fast games can be built when designers spend their time working on scenes and gameplay instead of coding scrollbar and button behaviour

i admire and get inspiration from hypercard for the same reasons.

i'm trying to implement something similar for my little game construction kit, called Exigy. if you've got UI suggestions on how to do this well, i'm all ears!

@GamesMissed as promised - @burgerbecky's port of Ultima I for the Apple IIGS.

i am fascinated by this one, because i bought it directly from Joe Kohn, who ran Shareware Solutions II as a web (mail) order business in the 2000s. it arrived exactly as you see here: in a white envelope, with manuals printed on a laser printer.

sadly, joe passed away in 2010. but his happy Apple IIGS legacy lives on in the form of a website which carries all issues of his Apple II-centric magazine:

Tubular Worlds is a 1994 side-scrolling shooter that delivers fast-paced arcade action across four worlds, each featuring four stages. With its intuitive controls, co-op mode, and nostalgic feel, the game’s soundtrack by Darius Zendeh adds an energetic layer to the experience, embodying the spirit of retro gaming.

The History of Glider
Bit pressed for time tonight, so let's just enjoy Classic Mac Gaming's video history of the popular shareware title Glider (10 minutes).

youtube.com/watch?v=vyeeQAcho00

It's a very simple game, but it had a surprisingly long life. There's something very Mac-like about it.

I just was reminded of an old #shareware 40-column MS-DOS game I played as a teenager. I searched for it and, for once, it's not obscure enough to not be documented online! dosgames.com/game/minelayer/

Oh wow. Wayzata CD Fun House. Of all the things I never expected to see again, yet it’s been on The Archive for a decade apparently.

Way back in the mid-90s, I found this disc in some computer shop for a few bucks (packaged with Home Alone 2 for DOS, a game which I thought was all right for the time). It’s a CD collection of dozens of Shareware games for Windows, DOS, and Mac. As simple as the games were, I still had a blast trying them all out.

I do believe it’s time to set up a Win 98 virtual machine and re-live my childhood.

This time, "Games that weren't" has not preserved a game believed to be lost for posterity, but rather nine previously unknown PD disks containing music demos and PD catalogues.

So I took 3 minutes to google and solved one of my biggest annoyances with Total Commander. If I can find a way to add bookmarks.

Hold on. I just tried something… this is big. If I understand this, then it might be _super_ effective. I think I just hit feature complete on what I want bare minimum. It's a little ugly but it works and it's fast. Next year I'm digging into the real stuff and who knows.

Now I just need to clone my boot drive successfully.

til about japan's Nifty-Serve online service, which was designed to be japan's answer to CompuServe.

while renown for its online forums, i was impressed to see that it was also a shareware distribution service. you could pay for and download registered versions of utilities and games, and the creators were paid directly by nifty.

while the service shut down in 2006, it was revived for one year as a museum of sorts for people to login and poke around. there was even an iOS app.

did anyone happen to archive a copy of the app?

it originally was downloadable here - if that helps to track it down:

Hey all, I’m Chuck. A literal graybeard these days with over 30 years in starting with TAMU in ‘92 and running a BBS for years prior. I was involved in early on with helping with encryption and daily builds for the HTC One m8 until they had their build environment up. My path eventually took me to where I get to work with intensely cool and smart people from our customers, the communities and of course my colleagues.

i adore this. in 1996, the creator of the Ultizurk series uploaded an ad for his little ultima-like rpg to wuarchive.wustl.edu, hoping a publisher would pick it up

"This is a beautiful mosaic of the upcomming game: MADMAN,

Very colorful, and gives an excellent overview of a startling
new role-playing game. Enjoy! -Dr. Dungeon"

It shows a game with an interface very similar to Ultima VI: the False Prophet. Characters walk around a medieval fantasy land, interacting with objects and NPCs.
