去年春天，考研成績出來以後，弗蘭克去校外一家專升本培訓機構兼職教英語，前女友在那裡做全職，機構的效益不錯，倆人都掙了不少錢。今年行情急轉直下，機構招生困難，前同事或被辭退，或只拿基本工資，前女友每月收入不足三千元，據說過得很慘。弗蘭克怪她「不聽話」，不肯和他一起報考本校的研究生，她有自己的想法，不甘心在二本院校讀研，報考了武漢的名校，在複試環節被淘汰。弗蘭克說她太幼稚，複試環節貓膩很多，沒有關係註定被淘汰，她從一開始就不該有不切實際的想法……

我忿忿不平地說：「Boss 直聘真不咋地，這個平臺充斥著垃圾職位和虛假招聘，前程無憂和獵聘網也好不到哪裡去，在上面找工作的都是可憐人。」
真正的好工作在另一個平行宇宙，那是一個封閉的系統，外人不得其門而入。 據媒體報導，有急於「上岸」的草根求職者，花幾十萬買一個體制內的工作，月薪才兩三千。
對於找工作，標哥已經心灰意冷，他不止一次地感歎「沒工作也能活」，很像是在自我安慰，他好歹也是幾間商鋪的房東，不用為生活費發愁。 標哥說起一位患腦梗的朋友，某事業單位編外人員，年齡和我們差不多，喪失勞動能力後被單位掃地出門，每月領六百元救濟金，老婆和他鬧離婚。
我想起自己的婚姻，沒人鬧離婚，卻勝似已經離婚，夫妻同在一個屋簷下，非必要不交流，所有交流圍繞著孩子。 我和老婆都是窮人，不得不搭夥過日子。

二〇二三年我寫了七萬多字的日記，貌似成績不錯，但我很清楚，大部分內容只是倉促炮製的文字垃圾，我曾幻想將日記重新加工，以達到可付印的標準，現在動搖了，垃圾就應該扔進垃圾桶，有那閒功夫不如寫新的文字。慢慢寫，慢工才能出細活。但留給我的時間已經不多，繼存款耗盡后，我借的錢也快花光，「慢慢寫」是我的幻覺，我窮得喝不起咖啡，要寫也只能帶著恐懼，惶惶不可終日地寫。我迫切需要炮製一篇新的文章，掙幾個 LikeCoin，這是我唯一的收入來源，我一直寫自己，素材耗盡，靈感枯竭，該寫寫別人了，先拿我的朋友弗蘭克開刀。
二〇二二年五月十九日，我在萬達廣場星巴克喝咖啡，手持 Kindle 閱讀，大杯拿鐵喝到一半，弗蘭克打來微信語音電話，約我在鼓樓見面，我立即答應，雖然花高價買了咖啡，本來打算在星巴克呆到天黑，但是和朋友見面更重要。
「我的理想是寫作，你呢？」
「我沒什麼理想，談理想很奢侈，有錢有閒才有資格談理想。」
「你是否考慮做學術研究？」
「我對學術沒有興趣，讀研只是為了找一份更好的工作。」
「你怕死嗎？我二十多歲時很怕死。」
