Went to Meiji Park today, and the Meiji Jingu Shinto shrine, and we were very grateful for the shade offered by the woodland that surrounds it. At the shrine, in the inner courtyard, there was a display of twenty or so bonsai trees of varying ages. The oldest one there appeared to be this specimen, a mere 300 years old! This was the first time I'd seen so many bonsai trees together in one place. If you are interested in getting away from the urban bustle of #Harakuju, then Meiji Jingu is the place to go.

Picture of a 300 year old bonsai tree. The tree appears to be mostly trunk, but is surrounded by small leaved growth, tended and trained over the years.

Walking around Tokorozawa, I spotted a small mikoshi (神輿), also known as a "portable shrine".

This one is being prepared for tomorrow by a group of women.

I took this at the Meiji Jingu Shinto shrine in Shibuya. I saw this type of elevated threshold a lot when I was in China. Two things I was told were that it is disrespectful to step on it and that it is there to keep out evil spirits.
