Just after daybreak on a weekend of low spring tides, a small crowd gathered at the mouth of Sungei Bedok, which now empties into a lagoon at East Coast Park. A sandbar rises with the sun to grasp at the anchorage offshore, and one could almost imagine walking on coarse sand to the closest ship and her skeletal crew. Children run on bare feet, crushing hermit crabs and sand dollars into the grains. Pakciks with plastic bags dig for lala and remis, couples pose for pixels, and a horde of snails, stars and smaller shelly things creep away into the pools to await the return of waters that are growing warmer and weirder with each new moon.
