Jukebox Friday Night on 14 November focuses on "Truth Or Lies", for songs about being true or telling lies.

And a song that hints that the truth (for some) is just the most convenient lie that you're willing to believe …

"But history moves mysteriously and nothing stays here for too long
They scorch the zebra from the road and paint a new one further on
But it still means what it meant then and it still looks much like it did
The pilgrims take their pictures still, its guilty secrets they stay hid
But is it still the Beatles' zebra crossing? …"

Shriekback, "Beatles Zebra Crossing?" (1992)

Friday 31 October 2025, which is Halloween and Jukebox Friday Night has the theme "Spells Tricks And Magic" for songs that include those three, as well as anything for Halloween, witches, black cats, and so on.

Time for some zombie rabbits –

"She still looks so fluffy lying there
Wearing her grandmother's earrings, gardenia in her hair …"

Shriekback, "Burying the Bunny" (2007)

Jukebox Friday Night runs the theme "Art In Music" on Friday 12 September.

Art Rock, Art Pop, songs about paintings and art (visual images).

So here's a track about the painter who paints. Honestly speaking, it's not a brilliant spoken -word song, but it has something.

Shriekback, "The Painter Paints" (2018)

"Somewhere else, files deleted reappear, reassigned, mouse-handed cat burglar booty, raw material ahead of blade and edit, an impact shine at the black/silver interface, mountain-textured, ice-burned… beautiful

The painter paints and the writer writes
What will you do, what will you do?"

#FortnightFridayMusic for August 22 2025 the word is "Jam"

Artist: Shriekback
Album: Jam Science (1984)
Song: Achtung!

Shriekback's "Oil & Gold" is my favourite album of all time, and "Big Night Music" is definitely top ten. I don't like "Jam Science" nearly as well (and it was a few years before I even found out about its existence). I do kind of like "Achtung!", though, which has a few good lines in it. Like the recurring line "Show me a black as bright as it is hard." Bright black? Yeah, that's cool.

"Fortnight Friday Music " has the theme "Nowhere" for Friday June 27.

Hosts: @MarkIngs @bborn
Subject: Nowhere
Song: "Nowhere Nothing Never" (2010)
By: Shriekback

It's just a song that raids the cliché bin:

"My special insights
Were used in sound bites
I worked the Draw-down
I planned the Claw-back
Avoided Mission Creep

I had the Upgrade
I got the En suite
A seat with sight-lines
I got the Glad Hand
(I put the tin hat on it)

It don't make no never mind
It don't make no never mind
Every naked ape it wants to live for ever

It don't make no never mind
When you leave the world behind
I got three words for you
'Nowhere Nothing Never' …"

It's "Fortnight Friday Music" and the theme for Friday June 13 is "Omen".

Hosts: @MarkIngs @bborn
Subject: Omen
Song: Invisible Rays (2000)
By: Shriekback

"I had a dream I walked the desert
I saw a virgin and a lion
They took me to the holy mountain
And showed to me all of these signs
I saw the fire upon the water
I saw the blight upon the land
I walked ten thousand miles to tell you
The things I saw are now at hand

Jihad, invisible rays
Killing boxes, cold fire
Number war, the woman of gold
Hard shadow, broken light …"

I was listening to the Album Art podcast in which three or four guys tell the history of an interesting LP cover. I wanted to slap them over their discussion of XTC's Go 2 album. Their assessment of how the cover came together was pretty knee-jerk and they dissed Barry Andrews' contributions, failing to note that Andrews went on to found #Shriekback. With that in mind, today's listening includes Oil and Gold, one of the most perfect LPs of the 80s.

Is there a crossover between #Shriekback and #HalfManHalfBiscuit fans? They're a similar vintage, different styles of music but both using fairly complex lyrics full of cultural references. I love them both.

Jukebox Friday Night, Friday 11 April 2025, has "Food or Drink" as a theme (including the staff who supply our needs):

Shriekback, "Devils' Onions" (2007)

"I'll get the clown's pie, with the Devil's onions
It's a feast indeed
We ride hard, we fear the Lord - we gonna live forever
That night we all got drunk a lot of things were said
We put that all behind us …"

Rest In Power to the incredible and intense bass guitarist Dave Allen, whose work with Gang of Four and Shriekback was a profound influence on my own music when I was at Berklee, and then beyond. I was privileged to get to see Dave with Shriekback in Boston in both 1985 and 1986, and his deep groove, coupled with his post-punk edge, propelled that band to excellence each time. Thank you for the music Mr. Allen!!

Dave Allen was one of the bassists who got me into playing. His mix of slapping & hard plucked bass was fascinating to me. It drove the songs with a growling threat I'd never heard before. In Shriekback it took on another tone like some strange beast emerged form a swamp to drag you around on land for a while before taking you down to a subterranean keep. Sad I never got to meet him but immensely glad I got to hear him.

The late Bassist Dave Allen of Shriekback and Gang of Four.
