Asarum caulescens, a species of wild ginger, plays a significant role in the Aoi Festival, one of Kyoto's oldest festivals. With a history stretching back over 1,400 years to the Heian period (794–1185), the festival features a procession of approximately 500 participants dressed in Heian-era court costumes parading through Kyoto on May 15th.
