Flowers and wife at the botanical garden today. #siemreap has so much of everything. Nice place to live. Living here has been a blessing. Just enough chaos to offset mundane reality. That would be the kingdom of wonder.

The triple hidden tower temple at the end of red road

Prasat Bat Chum is easily accessible via a red, new dirt road from the south near Prasat Kravan.

Known architect
One unique aspect of this temple is that the architect is known by name. Normally, the god kings are the ones who got their names connected to the temples built during their reign during the 630 years of the Khmer Empire.

Bat Chum was supervised by the architect, minister and guru Kavindrarimathana to the King Rajendravarman II approximately 952CE.

Kavindrarimathana is also accepted as the supervisor behind East Mebon Temple, Srah Srang and maybe the basic designer behind Pre Rup Temple. Meaning that he designed the main reservoirs and elements of most of the Southeast Grand circle Angkor Park.

Mahayana Buddhism
The other unique aspect, Bat Chum was built as Mahayana Buddhist Temple when the Khmer Empire still had Hinduism as the main religion. Another interesting glimpse into religious pluralism early on in this powerful empire.

The three towers are in poor condition when I visited, undergoing a several yearlong restoration project. The three towers are dedicated to Buddha, Vajrapani and Prajnaparamita. Simplified one is for the Buddha, the second for the bodhisattva symbolizing Buddhas power and relentless determination in conquest of negativity, and the third perfection of Wisdom.

This temple is a 12,5 km bike ride from Siem Reap Old Market on mostly flat roads and bike tracks.

That morning trip to Prasat Bat Chum among rich rice fields

Bat Chum Temple – ប្រាសាទបាទជុំ – is one of these off the main track sites where the travel is as interesting as the target.
There are several reasons to take a small side trip to the small Prasat Bat Chum. The beautiful entrance track among rice fields and cultural landscape is an obvious one.

It is near Prasat Kravan and close to Srah Srang reservoir. It is easily accessible both as part of and end point of a Small and Grand circuit tour of Angkor Park.

Or by mountain bike.

This morning, I met this fellow sitting near a small river trying fishing. Or simply enjoy a nice morning in the rice fields.
Good ones, either choice.

Photo shows a reddish-brown dirt track going straight through fields of rice into a small cluster of trees shielding a temple. The fields have some single trees spread out marking borders between rice paddocks. A small river is going in a culvert under the dirt track, and a man is sitting near the left side opening with a small fishing rod. It is a sunny morning with slightly warm sun and the sky is cobalt blue with some light clouds on the horizon.

There’s little scenes of sky and earth I find on some walk where I don’t know the direction or the why. We don’t need those things. My wife will ask where I am. I tell her in Cambodia. She laughs. Her sexy and wonderful laugh and she cusses me out in Khmer.

#today from the wonderful Ur Cafe here in beautiful #siemreap. Weather always seems between the blue and rain these days. Normally mornings beautiful and afternoon rains. I like that schedule. The Cambodian weather doesn’t care.

Been spending time thinking on how I write my things. Now it’s in a #obtf and I can use @ia to make it mine. The writing careens all around. No purpose or method. Kinda like daily life.

ur cafe and time spent well doing nothing.

When the coffee slows down at Noi I get to watch the little tapestry outside. I purposefully will go slow. Will keep my comfy chair. Will write some. I have my kindle with me. Regretfully somewhere I stopped reading on some story I got a free ebook online. A classic thing if I remember. I must start reading. It’s like saying I must stop drinking beer. Neither thing happens. Meanwhile it’s coffee and #siemreap and #cambodia and right outside life goes on.

Coffee and time. Some of both. I’ll take it.

By the foot of the hill: Playtime!

Remember being a child, and have access to a large playground with sandboxes?
Yeah, that feeling.
Road trips are more fun with great company. Even if they are small.
Travelling with a nearly two-year-old healthy and active child was nearly over the top fun. Especially when a lot of energy from sitting still in a car followed by a delicious lunch needed to be expended.

Getting ready for a steep ride and hike
We had just had lunch after several hours of driving in cars from Anlong Veng. After a short break time in the sun, we were getting ready for visiting the temple on the hill, Preah Vihear. And got prepared for any occasion. Including cold wind, rain, strong sun and some gifts for the shrines and guards on duty. That is how Khmer explore their own cultural heritage.
A Toyota Hilux was hired, our seniors in the travel party got inside up front, and the rest of us was the cool gang in the back.
And then we were off to expend some penned up energy.

Mommy’s shy little helper
Running a street food restaurant is normally a family business.
But even if mom is proud to show off her skills, the children may disappear in the background.
Or shyly hide.

Weekend picnic food
A weekend trip out of Siem Reap City with family and friends must include food. These stalls along the road or at visiting sites sells the favourite Khmer go-to food: grilled fish and BBQ-chicken. Often with catch of the day or the chef-mommy’s special seasoning or sauce as a bonus.
Then eaten nearby on a picnic mat with rice and cold drinks.
After which the holy falls of Kulen Mountains is visited for a cool and refreshing dip.
This can be a day-off relaxing highlight of an off-the-beaten-track trip. But this is Phnom Kulen, and during weekends it is a very popular spot for Khmer families to visit.
https://www.cantravelwilltravel.com/kulen-mountain-day.../
Visitors and tourists from out of the province are advised to visit during weekdays if they want a less crowdy experience.

The reclining lord Buddha @ Preah Ang Thom

This 8-meter-long statue of a reclining buddha is the largest in Cambodia and among the 10 largest in Asia.
It rests on top of a sandstone formation and the statue is carved out where it is. Meaning someone saw the buddha in the stone and carved until he was set free.
The surrounding Preah Ang Thom temple was built after the Buddha was carved.
Kulen Mountain was the place where the first Khmer prince declared the establishment of the Khmer Empire in 802. The Khmer prince Jayavarman II declared himself chakravartin (lit. 'universal ruler') and by that claimed imperium as a god king ruling an Empire.
The empire lasted for over 630 years.
Getting to this site is fast and easy from Siem Reap, and the area carries a lot of other excursion worthy sites, including trails for the day trip trekker.
The conglomerate of holy sites on the Kulen Mountain was proposed as an official World Cultural Heritage site by Cambodia just before the pandemic started. An approval of this request seems proper, this is the national mountains and cradle of Khmer culture and empire after all.

Photo shows the top part and head of a reclining Buddha-statue. The figure is resting on its left arm with eyes closed. The stone crop it is a part of and carved out of is clearly visible. A small offer of rolled together clothing with some money notes is placed as a headrest. The photo shows the whole figure ten meter down to its feet in perspective from the top head. From the statues armpit to its leg there is a narrow shelf between statue and stone, where a range of smaller Buddha statues in sitting pose and different colours are placed. The roof and walls of the building built over the statue is richly and colourful decorated with scenes from the first Buddhas life.
