As I look back on this year’s autumn aspen photography one theme that emerges (which I wasn’t aware of when I was photographing) is groves that encompass a wide range of colored foliage. At the right moments and in the right places you can sometimes see simultaneously all of the states of the autumn leaf transition, from green trees through yellow, orange, and red… and even some bare trees. “River of Aspen Color” — A band of colorful autumn aspen trees follows a gully down a Sierra Nevada slope.

The grove in this photograph is almost famous. The earliest photograph of it that I’m aware of is by Galen Rowell, and just about everyone who photographs aspens in the Sierra has probably given it a shot. Timing is everything here — along with a bit of weather luck — and I arrived a bit after the peak of color. (At that point there might not be any bare trunks, but some of the foreground trees would still show a bit of green.) “One Rock” — A solitary orange-tinted rock on a bed of blue and gray rock.

Rocks tell stories in the high country of the Sierra Nevada. I can’t understand the details of all of these stories (I’m not a geologist!) but I understand some of the themes. One is the constant wearing down and eroding of the highest peaks, a process that eventually transports rocks far from their source. “Sierra Stream, Aspen Color” — An Eastern Sierra Nevada stream lined with autumn aspen trees.

I photographed this scene on my recent trip to the Eastern Sierra Nevada to photograph autumn color. Though they are not the only source of fall color — look closely to see others in the photo — the aspen trees are the stars of the show. I arrived at just about the right moment, as there were lots of very colorful trees. But the trip was cut short when extremely strong winds arrived, bringing down many of the peak color leaves. When I started camping with small children in 2005, I was very interested in how to deal with bears. I had 20 years of backpacking experience, but kids make you rethink it all. I read Stephen Herrero's book and adopted grizzly avoidance methods in California Black Bear territory. Over the years we had a few encounters, but nothing bad. During most of the summer months, after the snow clears out (usually) by June, this meadow is a green place, often sunny, warm and inviting.
