You'll Shoot Your Eye Out
Place of the Day: Photo of the housed used as the location of the film A Christmas Story. It's two story, yellow clad siding with green window trim, a generous front porch with steps, and out front a black iron fence. The scene is winder and the bushes in front of the fence by the sidewalk are leafless. Snow is on the ground.

"There are maybe two dozen films I’ve seen as often as “A Christmas Story,” and “Ghostbusters” is one of them. So I have already visited that movie’s firehouse location in TriBeCa. I’d definitely take a detour in London to see this retro-futuristic spot from “A Clockwork Orange.” It’s kind of incredible that some original sets from the 1977 “Star Wars” are intact in Tunisia. And the real heads will know the significance of this sweeping staircase in Odessa, the setting for one of the most influential scenes in early cinema history."

Last of the changing leaves, well into December, at the temples Nanzenji (南禅寺) and Eikandō (永観堂) along the Path of Philosophy (哲学の道). I climbed up the huge gate of Nanzenji to get a panoramic view.

Але ж не праз прыватную тэрыторыю. Там ёсць дзе абыйсці. Там на ўскраіне вёскі ёсць могілкі з капліцай. Але я туды не хадзіў. Не было часу. Паглядзеў на руіны, захапіўся склепам і паехаў дадому. Для чаго ікона высока на дрэве - для мяне загадка. Калі прыедзеце туды, хутчэй за ўсё той гаспадар вас сустрэне. Тады спытайце ў яго.

On the site of the former Rengarter estate there is a private yard now, but the owner has collected information and printed it for tourists. It is better to leave the car near the cross and go for sightseeing the former yard. But not through private territory. There is a cemetery with a chapel on the outskirts of the village. But I did not go there. I had no time. I looked at the ruins, admired the crypt and went home. Why the icon is high on a tree is a mystery to me. You can ask the owner, if you come there.

We went all the way from home in northern Ōsaka Prefecture to pick up my wife's mother in Nagoya, because she's over 85 (first photo), then we took her to a hotel in Shiga Prefecture by Nagahama Castle (third photo), and finally back to our house for a few days.

I've never seen swans in the wild in Japan, but there were many on Lake Biwa along with cormorants and innumerable ducks. Perhaps the lake was a migration point, because winter weather started the day after we left for home.
