Among the many reptiles I saw in the Okanagan, these sleek and elegant racers (Coluber constrictor) were the most common.

We set up some moth lights during the Okanagan trip, and I was treated to a lot of beautiful moths, including this
American Lappet Moth (Phyllodesma americana).

These lovely harsh paintbrushes (Castilleja hispida) are a common feature in some areas of the Okanagan.

This checkerspot (Euphydryas spp.) was a spectacular start to a butterfly-filled trip in the Okanagan-Similkameen region.

I've just returned from a fantastic surveying trip in the Okanagan-Similkameen region with the BC Parks iNat team, where I saw a ton of new wildlife and fantastic landscapes. Many photos to come!

A grassland hill slopes downward. In the far background, rolling clouds blanket the sky. Grassy mountains capped with sparse conifer forests stand in the distance beyond the hill, and close to the camera are long grasses and yellow and blue wildflowers in bloom.

It's been interesting exploring some of the ecosystems that regrow after wildfires.

I'm currently volunteering with an ecological surveying trip in the Okanagan-Similkameen region of southern British Columbia! The project is a BC Parks collaboration with Simon Fraser University and the University of Victoria, and we're using iNaturalist as our primary data platform. We're seeing lots of fantastic things, and I'll have many photos to share when the trip is over.

A view from a high hilltop of a rolling landscape. On the right is a winding river, with grasslands sloping down towards it; on the left, where the terrain rises into small mountains, pine and fir trees cling to higher elevations. The sky is overcast but still fairly bright.

Also carry a medication pack. If you are on prescribed medications, pack the medication containers with the prescription information attached. It makes refills possible, if necessary.
