#OnThisDay in 2015, I arrived at Slab City—the infamous squatters community near the Salton Sea—just in time for their annual talent show at the makeshift “The Range” stage. It was one helluva weird introduction to a very weird place. I didn't realise it then, but #SlabCity in the US - which I was lucky enough to visit earlier this year (see video) - is chock full of #SolarPunk aesthetics and politics

The other day we went to Slab City- a #community of hippies and runaway #outsider artists living in a trailer and #diy home community just past the Salton Sea municipal waste dump power substation. With the remaining daylight we saw Salvation Mountain. before getting chased away with threats of violence. So much for peace an love. We found a more welcoming crowd at "The Range" where there was an open mic night. I wish I could make them neon!

Thinking back to my time in #SlabCity a few weeks ago, and while it was hot, sweaty and people had some questionable views about chem trails, it was still preferable to having to partake in the #capitalist grind of HE and the trials of #UCUrising. Take me back to the desert!

Thoroughly enjoyed my trip to #SlabCity. The people were welcoming and friendly, the use of folk art as #anticapitalist and #anarchist aesthetics and politics was breath-taking. If only it wasn’t so damn hot!!

Interesting, even fascinating in ways, but ultimately quite a sad place with some highlights nonetheless. A lot of people with dark pasts or unfortunate ones in a society that's not big on caring about or for them. #SlabCity

This documentary on #SlabCity in California is great, and packs a surprising emotional punch.

According to the rules of Slabs, says Vango, “You need to occupy a space for it to be yours. If you don’t occupy it, people can come in and take your shit.” If Vango left the library for the summer, for instance, when the desert’s so hot that the population of #SlabCity drops dramatically, the place would be looted.'
