It’s Oktoberfest Already

I had no idea Denver celebrated Oktoberfest in September. I always thought the Oktober part of Oktober fest referred to October because I’m a dumb American. Anyways, when I think of Oktoberfest, I think of a mega house party – a shit ton of drinking games with one guy who’s way too into the grill.

And houseparty vibes is what alt rock bands Moonpool and NVM gave. The people in the back were drinking beers and eating pizza while the people in front were bopping with the bands who were also bopping because, as at all house parties, the band is friends with like half the people. They only exist to give people a good time and to get laid. And while I can’t talk to the latter half of that, the former definitely happened.

Then demonic metal rockers Faetooth and shoegaze Slow Crush came in and changed it from a house party to a concert. From a social experience to a night of music. The crunchy Faetooth came in and… I mean, I guess they slowed things down. But they also made things angry with their crunchy guitar tones and whimsical gutter growls from hell. So a little bit of this, a little bit of that I guess.

And I guess Slow Crush also slowed things down with their atmospheric rock. Although, in my notes, I wrote that it was like an acid trip. So maybe the house party never stopped. Maybe people got too intense – Faetooth – and then the drugs kicked in – Slow Crush. Which happens, not just in Colorado where shrooms are now legal too, but everywhere.

When I left, Oktoberfest was obviously still rocking. It was a Saturday night and there’s a college not too far away. It felt highly appropriate given what I had just experience at Slow Crush’s show. The good vibes kept going, the smell of good food still invaded, the people… still existed.

I’m not going to judge people I’ve never met, but I did enjoy the gauntlet of festivities as I walked to my car, which is something I wouldn’t normally say. I guess I was just put in a good mood.

Slow Crush release new album ‘Thirst’ on Pure Noise

Slow Crush release Thirst today on Pure Noise Records, their first album for the label. Thirst’s ten tracks are a thematic cascade of noise that echoes the end and bursts into new life. The riffs are heavier, the vocals are dreamier and more emotional than ever.

Slow Crush’s dynamic textures, propulsive rhythms and gauzy riffs glow bright as ever, but this time with more grit. The past few years off the road have given the four-piece space to breathe and create since the release of their two critically acclaimed albums, Aurora (2018) and Hush (2021), which have sold over several tens of thousands physical copies, cementing them on the forefront of rock / shoegaze. When the time came to head into the studio, vocalist / bassist Isa Holliday, drummer Frederik Meeuwis, guitarists Jelle Ronsmans and Nic Placlé decamped to The Ranch in Southampton, U.K., to work with producer Lewis Johns with no expectations in mind, aside from a metamorphosis.

Thirst’s overarching themes are what Isa describes as “the fragility of human connection, and the complexity of love and self-identity.” In the depths of distance and absence, the heart trembles, torn between love and loneliness, as if clinging to the fragile thread of a connection that may unravel at any moment. The reunion can feel glorious, the connection sparkling new again for a while.

Isa explains, “We want people to let themselves go and feel embraced by the music, so that they can experience it in 4D. That’s what we hear a lot from people who come to see us live, or people who’ve listened to our previous albums, is that we take them to another dimension. I think that’s something that we miss in this day and age with everything that’s going on in the world, making us very aware of everything outside, but not allowing us to just be in the moment as much as you should. We want to let people take a moment for themselves and let the music take them wherever they would like to go.”

Slow Crush return to North America next week for their extensive Fall headlining tour which kicks off on the East Coast. The run includes performances at NYC’s Music Hall of Williamsburg, LA’s Teragram Ballroom and more – see below for a full list of dates. Tickets are on sale now.
