2025 #reading recap: the year I discovered the #Discworld series and Mick Herron #SlowHorses plus his other works.

I think the lower book count is fine with me. While I enjoyed the Slough House series, I find the books to be a slog of a read until the final chapters until the end where everything happens I think he's hitting his stride with those books, didn't care of the Zoe Boehm books as much or some of the other titles I found.

Can't believe I slept on Discworld for this long. V enjoyable

A screenshot of a Power BI report.

The first column has 3 elements. I borrowed 84 books as summarized in a card. Below that, is a month-by-month bar chart breakdown of books borrowed with a peak of 15 books in May, 12 in December but generally 5 a month. Below that is a slicer showing the years from 2018 to 2025 with 2025 checked.

The other two thirds of the screen are dominated by a tree map and a table that scrolls off. The tree map shows borrowed book count by author and the table that scrolls is alphabetical by title showing the source library and checkout month.

My top three authors were Terry Pratchett (28), Mick Herron (17) and Stephen King (6)A screenshot of a Power BI report. It is a tabular report showing totals by year and then a monthly breakdown.

2025 was my slowest reading year since the pandemic started with 84 titles read. There'd have been fewer except Covid caught me in December so I had lots of time to convalesce. Still, every book read is a good thing and a good use of the library systems.

The Secret Hours by Mick Herron: While technically not a mainline Slough House novel, I was told that it was a must-read. And now I know why. This may not be a Slough House novel per se, but it is set in the same world and sheds light on some key past history for some characters. It takes a little time to get going, but once it kicks into gear, it's a compelling read. It should really be included in the recommended reading order lists! #SlowHorses #Books

Die Zeit allein im Haus meines Bruders dazu nutzen, um so viel #SlowHorses Folgen wie möglich zu schauen.

Standing By the Wall by Mick Herron: Reading this around the Christmas holidays was perfect timing. It's a relatively short story that answers a pressing question from the main novels while also, it seems, serving as a prelude to The Secret Hours. (That novel is next on my reading shelf, so I'll find out in due course!) It's also the final story in this collection of novellas, so I've finally completed this book, too. #SlowHorses #Books

That is… not what that means. #SlowHorses

Very late to the party but I've just discovered Slow Horses. Jackson Lamb is the best on-screen version of John Constantine I've ever seen.

He uses experience, knowledge and bluff to own every encounter, getting one over on people far more powerful. All topped off with a beige trench coat and chain smoking!

Just finished this over the weekend. I do love the TV series, but writing like this opening paragraph is why, for me and probably others, the books remain the main event:

"What you see when you see a blank page is much what you hear when you hear white noise; it’s the early shifting into gear of something not ready to happen – an echo of what you feel when you walk past sights the eyes are blind to; bus queues, whitewashed shopfronts, adverts pasted to lamp-posts, or a four-storey block on Aldersgate Street in the London borough of Finsbury, where the premises gracing the pavement include a Chinese restaurant with ever-lowered shutters and a faded menu taped to its window; a down-at-heel newsagent’s where pallets of off-brand cola cans block the aisle; and, between the two, a weathered black door with a dusty milk bottle welded to its step, and an air of neglect suggesting that it never opens, never closes."

Bad Actors by Mick Herron: Book 8 of the Slough House novels. This one played some games with timeline that initially left me confused until I realized what was happening. It also leaves a big question unanswered for the longest time. Which only made me more enticed to keep reading, to be honest. This one could have used a little more denouement, perhaps, but it still comes together well enough. Only one more before I'm caught up! #SlowHorses #Books

Three down, three to go (there are two more after that too I think). They are enjoyable, but while the writing is good in a narrative sense, it doesn't feel particularly good in the literature sense. I'm going to have to reread some Graeme Green because I definitely remember that as truly wonderful writing.
