BANGKOK, Thailand – A sophisticated network of fake social media accounts sprang to the impassioned defense of former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte after he was sent to the International Criminal Court to face charges over his bloody drug war.

Around a third of accounts discussing the arrest on the platform X, mostly praising Duterte and lambasting the court, were fake, according to research shared with Reuters by a tech firm that termed it a “deliberate, organized” campaign. (READ: Supreme Court, ICC targeted by ‘fake news’ after Duterte arrest)

The accounts acted with a sophistication that made them hard to distinguish from real people, it said.

Such aggressive proliferation of disinformation has now begun shaping discourse around the Southeast Asian nation’s mid-term elections next month, said the company, Israel-based Cyabra, which uses artificial intelligence to identify fake accounts.

Its findings echo warnings from lawmakers and researchers in the Philippines and indicate increasingly sophisticated and “seamless” manipulation

Two weeks ago, I sent a newsletter about how former president Rodrigo Duterte’s arrest activated familiar disinformation tactics online. We were just starting to monitor the online discussions then, but were already reminded of the environment during the Duterte era.

The Duterte era was a time when disinformation and propaganda online were so rampant that they distorted the line between truth and manufactured reality. It was also a time when critics and journalists were attacked relentlessly.

Although the repercussions of Duterte’s disinformation machinery never really left when he stepped down in 2022, the intensity did fade. (On a personal note, it had been years since I last received an email calling me “stupid” for reporting on disinformation — until my last newsletter).

Post-Duterte arrest, the past two weeks took us back to that era, as if we’re reliving it all over again. But some things did change. Here are thre

MANILA, Philippines – Up until February, it seemed like Canada was well on its way to MAGAfication — or the political shift toward US President Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) movement.

The Conservative Party of Canada (CPC), which shares ideological parallels with Trump’s MAGA, had been maintaining its lead in polls over the incumbent Liberal Party (LPC) following the 2021 federal election. However, there’s one factor that the CPC didn’t see coming: Trump himself.

Trump’s imposition of a 25% tariff on imports, as well as his threats to annex Canada, have inflamed Canadian nationalism and derailed the CPC’s momentum. An IPSOS survey released in February showed that the incumbent Liberals had gained a two-point lead over the CPC — their first good number since 2021. This further grew into a six-point lead in a subsequent poll released in March, with the LPC at 42% and the CPC at 36%.

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines yet again made history when former president Rodrigo Duterte was arrested on Tuesday, March 11, over a warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC), which charged him with alleged crimes against humanity.

It was a highly charged moment for Filipinos. Users online marked Tuesday as a “day of reckoning” and justice for the estimated 30,000 Filipinos killed in Duterte’s drug war when he was Davao City mayor and president. Politicians critical of Duterte said it was a victory for accountability. Families of those killed in the drug war welcomed his arrest, too, and hoped it was a step towards justice for the victims.

But according to Duterte’s robust social media army, the real victim was the former president, who now has to face the ICC over an anti-drug war campaign that they claim was done out of love for his country.

The Nerve looked into Facebook discussions surrounding former president Duterte since his arrest, and found that his supporter

MANILA, Philippines — The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) acknowledged the need for a regulatory body to combat abuse and disinformation on social media platforms.

In a press conference held on Monday, March 3, PCO Undersecretary and Palace press officer Claire Castro stressed the “timely” need for a separate agency tasked with regulating social media. She cited the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board and Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas as examples of regulatory bodies in the country.

“Kapag po naabuso [ang social media], mayroon po itong effect sa taong maaaring siraan, maaaring ang mga organisasyon, ahensiya na maaaring siraan na walang basehan, malaki pong impact ito lalo na kung paniniwalaan ng mga tao,” she said.

(When social media is abused, it has an effect on people, organizations, and agencies whose reputations can be destroyed without basis, and this can have severe impacts if people believe such lies and attacks.)

Castro also discussed the possibility of working with Congress to pass relevant legislation. Earlier in February, a tricommittee of the House of Representatives held public hearings to identify gaps in legislation aimed to counter disinformation. These hearings were snubbed by various pro-Duterte personalities, who have since been <a href

The US presidential election campaign further emphasized what we have long suspected: X is a toxic media platform, and its owner, Elon Musk, has leveraged its influence to shape political discourse. This assertion was made in a recent statement released on The Guardian’s website.

MANILA, Philippines – X CEO Linda Yaccarino on Wednesday, January 8, had a ready comment for Mark Zuckerberg’s recent announcement to end fact checkers on Meta platforms in favor of a community-based correction method called Community Notes, a version of which originated from X.

The CEO had an on-stage interview with journalist Catherine Herridge, formerly of CBS News, at CES 2025.

Yaccarino said: “How cool is that? I think it’s really exciting that when you think about Community Notes being good for the world, think about it as this global collective consciousness keeping each other accountable at global scale in real time.”

She added: “And it couldn’t be more validating than to see that Mark and Meta realized that, right? And when you think about Community Notes, Mark and Meta realized that it’s the most effective, fastest fact-checking without bias…. Also, it inspires great behavior. Human behavior is inspired because when a post is [given a Community Note, it’s] dramatically shared less. So that’s the power of Community Notes

As an entrepreneur, I understand the necessity of building a monetization model, and there's nothing wrong with that. But the question is: will BlueSky become another mass product that sooner or later ends up in the hands of another Elon Musk, as happened with Twitter? Therefore, I've decided for myself: BlueSky is interesting, but it's not worth fully switching from Mastodon yet.
