A year ago on the return trip from #SolarEclipse2024, I stopped at Arizona's Meteor Crater. It's officially Barringer Crater, after the man who first proposed it might be an impact crater, tried to understand its geology, but died before he could prove it. Later it became the first proven impact site after geologist Eugene Shoemaker noticed its geology was like Nevada's nuclear test blast craters, but vastly bigger. spacey.space/@AstroHawk/112265 #astronomy #geology #space #spacegeek #travel

A year ago on the return trip from #SolarEclipse2024, I posted a picture (which I took the previous day) of the Sierra Madera impact crater near Fort Stockton, Texas. The crater is 8mi/13km wide and US Hwy 385 goes through the middle of it. But the highway is the only spot you can see it since the rest of the crater is private property. So it was easy to keep the stop quick, take a few pictures and continue the drive. spacey.space/@AstroHawk/112258 #astronomy #geology #space #spacegeek #travel

A year ago I was on the drive back home on the #SolarEclipse2024 road trip. From the far point of the trip in Houston, I made some more #space related stops on the way home: Sierra Madera impact crater near Fort Stockton TX, NSF's Very Large Array radiotelescope near Socorro NM and Meteor Crater near Flagstaff AZ. Overnight stops were at Austin TX, Las Cruces NM, Flagstaff AZ and Brigham City UT. #astronomy #space #spacegeek #travel

@TidalFlats @KrajciTom my astronomy club just informed me of this exquisite work.

Last yearโ€™s corona really stuck in my head as different. I immediately thought โ€œbrushed hairโ€. 2017 reminded me more of flower petals

One year ago, April 10, 2024... 2 days after #SolarEclipse2024, I visited NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston. That part of my itinerary was intended to be an easy success in case the weather turned the eclipse viewing into a failure. Fortunately, that succeeded too. spacey.space/@AstroHawk/112252 #astronomy #NASA #space #spacegeek #travel

One year ago, the day after the April 8, 2024 total #SolarEclipse2024, I continued south from Dallas to Houston to see NASA Johnson Space Center, with a quick peek before the visitor center closed for the day. I returned for more there the next day. That day was the road trip's farthest point with dinner at the coast in Galveston. After that everything was on the journey back home. #spacegeek #travel

One year ago... #weather is what you get. Forecasted storms were late, cleared just enough just in time to see #SolarEclipse2024 totality in Mesquite TX. Since cumulus clouds grow with daytime solar heating, the partial eclipse leading up to totality apparently cooled the air enough to inhibit them. Not everyone was as lucky that day. Spring is unpredictable - actual cloud cover along the path of totality differed from average expectations. spacey.space/@AstroHawk/112237 #eclipse #astronomy #travel

One year ago, April 8, 2024, was the total #SolarEclipse2024 across North America. I watched from the Totality Dallas festival in Mesquite, Texas. Located at a regional park in the eastern Dallas metro, it had longer totality (4 minutes) than the big sold-out event in downtown. spacey.space/@AstroHawk/112236 #astronomy #travel

@TidalFlats

Man, a year ago today we stood in the shadow of the moon.

What a long, strange trip that was.

One year ago was the day before the April 8, 2024 Total #SolarEclipse2024. I got to Mesquite, Texas (eastern Dallas metro) around mid-day to try to arrive ahead of the crush of traffic as everyone came from everywhere to the path of totality. Even before I found a place to get lunch, I met a news crew preparing to cover the next day's festivities in downtown. I was interviewed by AP aerospace reporter Marcia Dunn. spacey.space/@AstroHawk/112231 #astronomy #spacegeek #eclipse #travel

A year ago I was on the way to see the Total #SolarEclipse2024. With snowfall expected to close I-84 in eastern Oregon's Blue Mountains, I had to leave a day early on the road trip to stay ahead of it. The snow followed just behind me until the Rocky Mountains in New Mexico where the storm weakened enough that a slightly late 9:30am departure allowed the sun to melt snow & ice on the pass on I-40. Overnight stops were in Boise ID, Price UT, Albuquerque NM and Wichita Falls TX. #astronomy #travel

A year ago today, on my road trip to see the April 8, 2024 Total #SolarEclipse2024 in Mesquite (east of Dallas) TX, I stopped in Moriarty NM for a quick visit to the Southwest Soaring Museum. So many gliders to see, so little time... But then I had to hit the road again. An eclipse waits for no one. avgeek.social/@ikluft/11222577 #aviation #pilot #avgeek

@jeffluszcz Cool, enjoy! I flew into Boston and drove north to Houlton, Maine for the total solar eclipse last year (I didn't live anywhere near the path of totality). Got this poster, some other souvenirs, and most of all an awesome experience. I was standing under that clocktower during totality.

#eclipse #solareclipse #totalsolareclipse #eclipse2024 #solareclipse2024 #totalsolareclipse2024 #houlton #houltonme #maine

A framed drawn poster hanging on a white wall, primarily featuring a clocktower in the foreground and the totally eclipsed Sun in the background, along with text. It reads in stylized all-caps:

"Visit
Houlton
Maine

The Final Destination for
The Great North American
Total Solar
Eclipse

Apr. 8 2024"

The clocktower shows the time as 3:33 (in the afternoon by implication), the moment of maximum eclipse. The date is shown right below the clocks on adjacent faces of the tower.

"The Solar Eclipse Analemma Project" is #NASA #astronomy Picture of the Day #APOD - A clever composite photo of positions of the Sun in the sky from near Stephenville, Texas over a year between March #Equinox of 2024 (a year ago) & 2025 (today). For the April 8, 2024 image of the Sun, it shows #SolarEclipse2024 at totality as seen from that location. apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap250320.ht

NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) for 2025-03-20 "The Solar Eclipse Analemma Project" https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap250320.html

NASA's photo caption:
Recorded from 2024 March 10, to 2025 March 1, this composited series of images reveals a pattern in the seasonal drift of the Sun's daily motion through planet Earth's sky. Known to some as an analemma, the figure-eight curve was captured in exposures taken on the indicated dates only at 18:38 UTC from the exact same location south of Stephenville, Texas. The Sun's position on the 2024 solstice dates of June 20 and December 21 would be at the top and bottom of the curve and correspond to the astronomical beginning of summer and winter in the north. Points that lie along the curve half-way between the solstices would mark the equinoxes. The 2024 equinox on September 22, and in 2025 the equinox on March 20 (today) are the start of northern fall and spring. And since one of the exposures was made on 2024 April 8 from the Stephenville location at 18:38:40 UTC, this analemma project also reveals the solar corona in planet Earth's sky during a total solar eclipse.
A fleeting moment of cosmic perfectionโ€”capturing the breathtaking 2024 eclipse from Elberfeld, Indiana. The universe never ceases to amaze. ๐ŸŒ‘โœจ

Viewing April's total solar eclipse from a hike-in primitive camping spot in Texas. The forecast was for complete cloud cover the entire region, and early morning was indeed cloudy, but then it mostly cleared. There was some cloud intrusion, but mostly the eclipse was very visible. #SolarEclipse #SolarEclipse2024
A 3-by-3 grid of the eclipse's progression. The top and bottom rows are of the moon moving over and then away from the sun, respectively, and are orange due to the filter needed to protect from the sun. The middle row is of totality and did not need the filter; these shots show the moon's black silhouette with a white halo from the sun's corona, and several pinkish solar prominences dotting the edge. Several of the photos show signs of partial cloud cover.A arid scene of pale rocky ground, numerous small yellow flowers, and low-lying prickly-pear cactus pads, surrounded by trees of various shades of green.A wooden bench sits in a scene of low grass, prickly-pear cactus pads, and blue-purple flowers, along with some bushes and then a line of somewhat scraggly trees. An aeromotor windmill, as commonly seen in this area, rises above the trees.A small meadow thickly covered in yellow and blue flowers. A variety of short trees of different heights and shades of green surround the meadow.
