So, for the upcoming one year anniversary of #SolarPunkSunday on December 21st, we invite writers, artists and makers to share their works! I'll be focusing on #SolarPunk and #Resiliency around the world, as we are all in this TOGETHER! #AnotherWorldIsPossible!

So, even with howling winds, the removable window that I insulated with #Oakum was nice and tight. I've doing some research into #Insulation materials that don't involve #SyntheticChemicals and #SyntheticMaterials. And looking into #TraditionalWays of making oakum (which involves pine tar instead of petroleum products). Tune in this #SolarPunkSunday!

So, the #TallowSoap hardened just fine! (Pics soon...) I trimmed it today and it was harder than the soap made with palm oil -- so they are obviously interchangeable. The tallow-blend (with coconut and olive oils) just needed more curing time!

I so miss posts by @breadandcircuses (who I used to follow on the Bird Shite site). Part of the reason I've continued posting about #SolarPunkSunday and #Degrowth is to honor the inspiration that he, and @MaQuest and @BrambleBearGrrrauwling have given me! It's coming up on the ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY of SPS! What do you want us to cover for that? (And thanks for all the encouragement by folks! It's truly appreciated!)

Meanwhile, back in our yard, the native grasses and wildflowers are sleeping -- hopefully for the winter! The sticks mark the beds where I planted them!

Peppers are slowing down in the greenhouse. Temps so far haven’t gone below 39F/4C but ají panca is dying and ají charapita is showing cold damage. I cut back many peppers that weren’t producing and they look ok. The charapita is coming indoors now.

We did it!!!

We built a new free fridge and community pantry!

It took about a hundred days from deciding to do it, through planning, and finally execution (thread above tracks this). And that is for putting down concrete and electrical. If we did a simple fridge on a pallet, it can be quicker. But even going all out, dang!

So we held the ribbon cutting ceremony. A lot of folks showed up to do the initial stock. Now we'll maintain it and spread the word out to the community. The town has a food resource app. The library maintains a list. I'll add it to our site. The local paper is writing an article.

This is also just the first part of this fridge. They're adding another pantry and an awning to cover it all.

Alright. This one is done. On to the next one!

Alrighty then... I think I'll save the rest of the posts I have planned for next week's #SolarPunkSunday. I've bookmarked articles about #FoodWaste (including recipes), more #Rewilding stories, and #SolarPunk and #FoodSovereignty initiatives around the World! And, of course #RepairCafes, #LibrariesOfThings, #VisibleMending, #Degrowth, and other related topics! TY to @MaQuest and everyone who chimed in and/or used the hashtag! I'll be re-boosting some SPS articles from yesterday before transitioning back into current events.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Balls

So, this recipe does involve butter (not sure if another oil would work -- maybe coconut oil?). I know I've seen some recipes which use coconut oil in the chocolate coating. We use UNSALTED butter and also GF rice cereal. And it takes hours to prepare (lots of fridge/freezer time), but everyone we know loves them! We usually end up making two batches -- one for friends and family, and one for us!

Inside part:
2 cups creamy natural PB
2 cups rice krispies or equivalent)
1/2 cup unsalted butter
2 cups confectioner's sugar

Outside part (chocolate coating):
1 cup heavy cream
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
12 oz semi-sweeet chocolate

For the balls, mix the peanut butter, rice krispies, unsalted butter (melted and cooled), and the confectioner's sugar. Chill the mixture for 2 hours in a fridge.

Once chilled, shape them into 1-inch balls, and chill them for 2 hours in the fridge.

For the coating, in a heavy saucepan, heat the cream and the butter together over medium-high heat. When that comes to a boil, you pour that over the chocolate (in a bowl), then stir until smooth, cool slightly.

Then dip the balls into the coating.

Place on wax paper on a tray and chill in the fridge until firm. It is best to store them frozen, and let them thaw slightly before eating (I like them frozen).

Hubby has been making them for 30 years. We're not sure where the original source came from (a cookbook owned by his ex?).

I've actually kept a Norfolk pine going for quite a few years after the holidays... Not sure if that was kindness or torture. Nowadays, I just enjoy the ones that are in the nearby woods. However, if you're in a place where they can thrive outdoors (and aren't invasive), I'd say give it a go!
