Understanding SMF properties in Solaris-based operating systems
SMF is the illumos system for managing traditional Unix services (long-lived background processes, usually). It’s quite rich in order to correctly accommodate a lot of different use cases. But it sometimes exposes that complexity to users even when they’re trying to do something simple.

🇩🇪🚍⚡️🔋 At Mobility Move 2026 in #Berlin, #Germany, #Solaris is showcasing the Urbino 10,5 electric, a compact zero-emission #midibus built on its modular drive concept. The 10.5-metre vehicle offers a turning radius under 17 metres, seating for 33, and total capacity of up to 85 passengers, making it ideal for dense urban routes and historic city centres. Powered by a 240 kW electric motor and up to 400 kWh batteries, it supports full-day operation with plug-in or pantograph charging. Features include an energy-efficient CO₂ heat pump, GSR2-compliant safety, and optional driver-assistance systems. The model won the #Sustainable Bus Award 2026.

Regarding the Zoned UID feature for rootless container support for #ZFS
Ready for re-review feeling nostalgic . I know my brother Winston Williams would be excited. Not sure we ever had a Solaris system. It was a little out of our budget. But Winston had a SUN Microsystems monitor.

I'm getting pretty close to finishing my first video on the ubiquity of win16 APIs in 90s computing.
The main bit of research that I'm having a little trouble with is the exact pricing for the SDKs for #solaris, #aix, and #hpux from the mid 90s
Does anyone have a link, or receipts, of purchases, catalogues, etc of things like that?

I really appreciate that #oracle updated #solaris CBE to 11.4.90 but as much as I like it with each and every release the more obvious it becomes „the #desktop is not the Solaris computer“ .. unsuable in #virtualbox as desktop 💩 you better vnc to it. Sometimes I think I should really give up on that and go mainstream with #AmigaOS 😅🍺✌🏻 Just waiting for my NVIDIA for my X7-2 so i can use it as a desktop 😁
🤔 Oracle Updates Free Solaris CBE For Open-Source Developers / Non-Production Uses
「 Four years ago Oracle announced Solaris CBE as the "Common Build Environment" version of Solaris 11.4. Oracle Solaris CBE is made available as free for open-source developers and other non-production use. Oracle this week released a new version of Solaris CBE for those wanting this free* version of Solaris 」
New Oracle Solaris CBE release released
Oracle's Solaris 11 basically comes in two different flavours: the SRU (Support Repository Update) releases for commercial Oracle customers, and the CBE (Common Build Environment) releases, available to everyone. We've covered the last few SRU releases, and now it's time for a new CBE release.
We first introduced the Oracle Solaris CBE in March 2022 and

I started working on my implementation of #audio and #music production software (aka DAW) called Maolan. It supports #FreeBSD and #Linux, with experimental support for #Mac and #Windows. I am currently working on support for #NetBSD and #OpenBSD. When I get it to work on all the mentioned OSes at least in virtual machine, #Solaris is next. Once the core architecture is in place, contributions will be more than welcome. Stay tuned.

Interesting - I wasn't actually aware that there was a #Solaris CBE with an up to date compiler. While I haven't tried it, this might be useful for anyone who wants to build their own OpenJDK from source on that platform now that #Temurin doesn't produce one.
