[Book reviews] #Solarpunk, #utopian and #AntiCapitalist fiction for imagining brighter futures

Novels with political under- and over-tones that have captivated me recently

by Katy Nightingale, Nov 28, 2024

"All of the books I’m including here are unique in their styles - some encompassing all of these visionary genres, and some just a few of them. Here’s a little glossary I came up with:

- futurist 🔮 - taking place in the future

- utopian 🌈 - taking place in an idealistic society where everything is designed to be harmonious, just, and fulfilling for all people

- solarpunk ☀️ - a sub-genre of utopian literature, solarpunk fiction takes place in a sustainable, eco-friendly future where humanity lives harmoniously with nature, often featuring renewable energy, green cities, and with a focus on social equity

- anti-capitalist 🌹 - the characters and plot tell a story that illustrates the pitfalls of capitalism and shows resistance and possible alternatives"

Episode 5.7: Building Dual Power, with Andre Rosario [aka HydroponicTrash]

André Rosario (aka HydroponicTrash) joins us this week on the podcast to tell Ariel all about dual power - what it is, how it fits in with solarpunk, and how people can mobilize it in their daily lives. Their conversation ranges from the history of the term dual power, to examples from André’s own life, to the concept of mutual aid, the importance of imagining a better world, how to build relationships as an introvert, and even includes a discussion of human nature.

In this episode, Christina talks with hacker and enthusiastic solarpunk Paweł Ngei about the power of solarpunk narratives to open our eyes to the ways in which we do things and invite us to critically examine them. Why is tech built this way? Who are we disenfranchising by not having more or different designs for things? Who are we handing over too much power over our lives to mindlessly letting them thrust their tech into our lives without us knowing how it works?

For more info about and thoughts from Paweł, you can check out his blog (alxd.org), be inspired by his podcast (podcast.tomasino.org @SolarpunkPrompts) read his short story about a disabled inventor at glider.ink, or read his review of Kim Stanley Robinson’s The Ministry for the Future at his blog.

Other solarpunk media Paweł recommends are the book A Half Built Garden by Ruthanna Emrys and to a great solarpunk engineering wiki: www.appropedia.org

A screenshot of a review. 5 stars. Wild Flowers, Electric BeastsI don't usually read sci-fi books at all, as I hardly ever like them. but since this book was recommended to me, so I gave it a chance - and I really liked it a lot!
The story takes place in two totally different worlds. In both worlds theres one protagonist, and I came to really like them! Even though none of these two worlds is the one we know from our own experiences, which would normally be a factor that puts me off, I felt comfortable in both of these worlds.
I also appreciated the way the author brought highly topical issues into the story, topics that have our daily attention.
My great hope is, that the author is going to publish a sequel!
