Questioning an “intro to” seems reasonably hard in his case. I would likely lean Into the Woods first, as there are more attachment points and I think musical entry points there, over Sweeney Todd, at least “as a show.” But the track you specifically dropped is great, in this regard.
Heart of hearts, I’m a Merrily We Roll Along pusher. My favorite Sondheim, and one of the least-known.

Musical Interlude: Riding the DC Metro for the first time in, like, forever, was quite nostalgic. I used to take it every day to work, when I was a gov't contractor who worked a few blocks from the White House. Glad I don't work there anymore, to be honest.

Excellent story on #Sondheim's papers, their miraculous journey on the way to our Library of Congress. I tripped him once in a theatre lobby (not on purpose), he was taking notes on Merrily in D.C. at the time. Got to do the world premiere production of Sunday in the Park with George *in the round* - we had the Broadway props & costumes which was wild. Stephen #Sondheim 's discography is my current #music quest, focusing on original Broadway recordings, but some revival and movie versions, too. What are your favorites? So far, and I like the 1961 film version of #WestSideStory with Natalie Wood/Marni Nixon and the 2008 revival version of #Gypsy with Patti Lupone. To me, those vocalists especially capture the characters they are portraying, and the emotional cadence of what's happening in the story.
#OnThisDay in 1977, Musical revue "Side by Side by #Sondheim" opens at Music Box, NYC; runs for 390 performances.
We are well and truly “In the Woods” in exactly the way Sondheim meant the metaphor.
Now is a great time to re-listen to the musical, if that’s your thing.
