Beautiful Plumper Bay. Waters between Songhees & Esquimalt first peoples. Songhees First Nation longhouse, across the bay. Prior to colonialism, beaches around the bay & greater Esquimalt harbour areas, were full of shellfish/seafoods & food plants from the sea. Since colonialism, especially with a big military base right beside both first nations, the waters are too polluted & people can't harvest foods safely there.

A scenic view of a calm bay beneath a blue sky dotted with white clouds. The foreground features vibrant yellow wildflowers framing the scene. In the distance, several small islands covered with trees dot the water, creating a serene and picturesque landscape. The shoreline reveals a mix of sand and rocky terrain.

Beau working with Tyler, from #Esquimalt #FirstNation - crafting the maple branches for day 2 of men's group healing event. These will be used to mount the salmon we will be cooking over the fire this morning.
Beau & I are heading out to meet Tyler soon to build fire, butterfly & mount the salmon & other related preparation work.

It's a gorgeous day in Esquimalt & #Songhees territories. Sunny & warm morning!

One of a few truckloads of #driftwood dropped off at Gorge Park for the ongoing nature rewilding restoration project. This is near the estuary area of the large urban nature park; by the Gorge nature house.

I'll be at #Esquimalt #GorgeWaterway /Kinsmen park in a few hours to join the invasive green crab monitoring team. It's another trapping/netting day & I'll be documenting some of the project's work.

[ Since 2022, we have participated in the Department of Fisheries and Oceans’ European Green Crab Monitoring Project. European green crabs are a destructive invasive species that removes eelgrass very efficiently, destroying habitat for everything else in the Gorge. Unfortunately, we caught adult European green crabs in the Gorge for the first time in August 2024 through our monitoring program.

We are working with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and Peninsula Streams Society to remove as many as possible before the problem worsens. To prevent the spread of European Green Crabs, make sure to clean, drain, and dry off any watercraft according to BC Invasives. ]

One of the new Indigenous friends that I made at the ribbon skirt workshop this weekend, Kecia, is a fellow weirdo Aquarian & from Namgis First Nation in Alert Bay. Although we just met, I've met some of her family from her birthplace prior - it was really cool to chat about those unexpected connections.

Kecia brought this bag that her niece, Brianna Dick, made. It's a gorgeous #PurpleCamas #CoastSalish design.
Brianna has an #OnlineStore where you can see/buy some of her #handmade #Indigenous #ArtsAndCrafts

#BriannaBearArt is an Indigenous - owned and founded, #Canadian #artist store established in 2020 by Brianna Bear. Based in the traditional territory of the #Lekwungen, place to smoke herring lands of the #Songhees and #Esquimalt nations in #VictoriaBC.

Brianna started first as an artist with more than fifteen plus years of experience. She began learning under her grandfather Skip Dicks younger brother, Butch Dick. Afterwards she branched out into discovering her roots and design through her #cultural connections to Songhees & #Namgis formline design.

Today, working as one of a few Indigenous female artist within her traditional territory of the Songhees people, she has worked on murals, logos, small business designs, small event designs and more!

Brianna believes in telling stories through her design as you will see through this site."

We will be showing all of our ribbon skirts, along with past ribbon skirt workshop participants, at the joint #TruthAndReconciliation special evening event, co-hosted by #SNIWWOC & #KWENCH on September 30th.

Event Info:

SNIWWOC will be hosting our annual Truth and Reconciliation event at KWENCH bringing #community members together for an evening of #education, #togetherness, and #remembrance for Truth and Reconciliation in #VictoriaBC on September 30th 2024, 5:30-7:30pm PST.

#JoinUs to learn about the sacred #Indigenous practice of #RibbonSkirt making and the significance it holds within the Indigenous community. You will have the unique opportunity to view these beautiful skirts made by BC Indigenous/Indigenous BIPOC individuals, and learn about the importance of continuing these traditions.

You will also have the privilege to #WitnessTestimony from #ResidentialSchoolSurvivors, the ones who did not make it as well as for honoring all #IndigenousCommunities.

Truth and Reconciliation, also known as #OrangeShirtDay, is a reminder of what was done in #Canadian history that impacted the #IndigenousPeople, and continues to impact generations of Indigenous communities. On this day we highlight how the conversation needs to be continued as a step for #healing and #reconciliation.

SNIWWOC would like to take this time and day to #honor the people and their #culture that was lost. You will hear from a variety of #IndigenousSpeakers, #CommunityElders, and be witness to #SacredKnowledge, in the #SafeSpace that we will hold for all that would like to be part of this experience.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone, celebrating and giving a voice for those who could not. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided!
