Thinking about Scott Riley's talk. How mindful design respects user competency, autonomy, and relatedness. Points that are all very relevant to project design in citizen science too.

Here's the web site for Scott's book and design toolkit:

I want to shoutout @dletorey for his incredible support! Not only did he put on one of the best tech conferences in London this weekend*, but he also shouted me out on stage encouraging folks to donate to me.
& someone gave me £100!!! 😭
Thanks Dave for the verbal support & Stephanie for the financial support! Both help me continue this work.

You too can help me out: give.lolaslab.co

* was awesome & you should deffo keep an eye out for videos as they drop

@sarajw Super.

I wanted to not bother you with this whilst you were in the thick of it and/or travelling but you are an absolute joy! Really enjoyed #sotb2025

And I was stunned by your command of English!

If you were with me over breaks during #SotB2025 and I was trying to remember an old comedian who talked funny, turns out it was Professor Stanley Unwin, who spoke his own special "Unwinese":

stanleyunwin.com/unwinese.htm

I think he's just fallen out of the collective British memory - he spoke in a jolly and silly sort of way which sounded like it should be fully understandable, but wasn't.

Or, sometimes it was complete nonsense but you knew exactly what he meant!

I forgot my keys when I went to . I ended up having a very south London experience while waiting for my wife to get home — sitting on the kerb and making eye contact with a passing fox while eating fried chicken.

An ace summary of my talk by @lurkmoophy - he posted it and the ones for other #SotB2025 talks to his Bluesky account: bsky.app/profile/lurkmoophy.bs

By the way, Google lens did a great job here of recognising the text, I didn't have a lot to clean up for the alt text! Please let me know if the all caps is problematic, though.

THE COOL BITS OF THE OLD WEB

THERE ARE STILL PEOPLE OUT THERE BUILDING EXPERIMENTAL, EXPRESSIVE, CREATIVE WEBSITES, BUT NOT ALL Of THEM ARE ACCESSIBLE...

BUT I DON'T WANT TO SEND PEOPLE W/ FEWER SPOONS TO WCAG (IT'S AWFUL)

THE PROBLEM WITH WCAG GUIDANCE IS THAT IT EXCLUDES THE FUN/VIBES PART OF THE WEB. WHAT IF WE WANT TWISTY, WEIRD JOURNEYS THAT DEFY NORMS.

WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO OUR MULTIMEDIA WEB?

A BIG PART IS POSSIBLY HOW WE DESIGN + BUILD OUR THINGS... CSS, FIGMA HTML ARE VERY VISUAL... BUT THIS ISN'T GREAT FOR FOLKS WHO DON'T CONSUME THINGS VISUALLY...

State of the Browser has only confirmed how much I love smaller, community-driven developer events.

We can't all afford to fund a diversity ticket or be a sponsor, but we can help by Buying Tickets Early!

Especially for the events not geared to people with education budgets from big companies.

Buy early, help them budget, keep them afloat 💜
