Sea ice isn't just frozen water — it's a climate ally. Longer winters mean more carbon stays locked away in the Southern Ocean.

This Elusive #Antarctic #Squid Was Seen for the First Time
An expedition in the #SouthernOcean captured video of a rare species of deep-sea #cephalopod. Until now, it had been found only in fishing nets and in the bellies of seabirds.
This particular dive was part of the #NationalGeographic and #Rolex Perpetual Planet Expedition, an initiative to document #climatechange in the mountains, rainforests and #oceans.

Sea pigs, icefish and trilobites: #Antarctica’s mysterious marine life – in pictures theguardian.com/environment/ga

"True #trilobites went #extinct more than 250m years ago, but the #SouthernOcean is home to a living lookalike: Ceratoserolis trilobitoides. They have a segmented, armoured exoskeleton, which helps protect them from predators... after a marine science voyage, a team aboard #Australia’s icebreaker #Nuyina has collected some remarkable species from the waters around the #DenmanGlacier"

An industrial operation plundering the lifeline of a vital ecosystem NON-STOP❗This is krill fishing in #Antarctica.

We got as close as safely possible with our small boat to document how these super trawlers are pushing deeper into one of the last truly wild places on Earth - right in the feeding grounds of #whales and #penguins. This is vital evidence of what industrial exploitation looks like at the edge of the world: ships hauling in massive amounts of catch, dumping discards, with wildlife all around.

But there’s more...

We also captured something they probably wouldn’t want anyone to see. The video will go live in two days - stay tuned! ⏰ (Check the last photo for a hint.)

The #SouthernOcean is running out of time, and silence only helps those plundering it. ⚠️

Scientists collect unique sea creatures during voyage to East Antarctica abc.net.au/news/2025-04-03/nuy

"The RSV #Nuyina is partway through a 60-day voyage to the edge of #Antarctica — it's first mission dedicated solely to marine science... research teams are analysing some of the unique #biodiversity found in the #SouthernOcean. These include #SeaSpiders as big as your hand, #SeaStars that grow to the size of a dinner plate and #octopus species endemic to the region... some could be new to science"

The #SouthernOcean is cold... like, really cold. But it’s nothing we can’t handle. We’re gearing up to take on the #krill fleet and protect the Antarctic ecosystem - this is just one of the many steps to get us ready. 💪

Want to help❓Use our Krill Toolkit and demand that brands stop selling krill-based products. It’s just 3 easy steps, but the impact is HUGE. Find the link in our bio.
