Image of Arp 81, also known as NGC 6621 and NGC 6622, from the Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies by Halton Arp (1966).

In the original catalog, it was in the category: Spiral galaxies - Large, high surface brightness companions. The galaxies NGC 6621 (bottom) and NGC 6622 (top) are about mid way through a merger. A recent encounter pulled a long tail out of NGC 6621 that wraps behind the galaxy.

A grainy, black and white image of two galaxies that are in the process of merging, forming a U shape. The first, on the top of the left of the U, appears as a fuzzy blob. The galaxy core is partially obscured by a swirl of dark brown dust. The galaxy overlaps with its companion below it, a disturbed spiral galaxy. The remnants of two spiral arms stand out somewhat from a haze of stars. The bottom arm continues into a large fish-hook shaped tidal tail, forming the right half of the U. The tail is dotted with star clusters. A few white dots, which are stars, are seen on the black background of space.

RE: mastodon.social/@CampodeJuncos

If someone, from a hole, asks you for your hand to help them out, don't give it to them, because they'll pull you down with them. Tell them to look here. Are you going to look, or are you going to stay in your hole until you die, passing through Hell?

Teaser 😉

In the 1990s, I discovered this beauty while making an IR survey of dense molecular cloud cores in the Milky Way, searching for signs of star formation ✨🔭

Almost 10 light years long, it's a bipolar outflow of gas ejected at hundreds of km/sec from a young, massive protostar 🌟

Officially HH288, it's also called The Dragon Jet, thanks to its fire-breathing appearance 🐉

And next week, you'll get to see my JWST image of it – it's special 😱

Stay tuned 📻

An image of space showing many stars and a long, linear feature running from upper right to lower left. It resembles a Chinese dragon, with the head breathing fire to the lower left, and the long tail to the upper right. The image is monochrome, but has been rendered with a look-up table where the background is red and the brighter stars and jet are yellow.

Meet the Voyager mission: Voyager 1 and 2 launched in 1977 to explore Jupiter, Saturn and then the space beyond our solar system.

Voyager 1 entered interstellar space in 2012; Voyager 2 followed in 2018.

Both still send back data today.
