I wrote about looking at AI not only as a genAI chatbot but also as everyday infrastructure that reorganizes routines, memory, and legibility. "Companion, revisited," draws on Haraway and Suchman to think about AI as a new kind of companion species: ambient, extractive, and increasingly unavoidable. #Raptor overhead! This bird of prey (I am uncertain of the exact #species) was flying above and in front of me as I walked the section of the path alongside Bawsey Drain between Columbia Way and Lynnsport in North Lynn this afternoon.

A raptor, the species of which I am unsure, flies above North Lynn. It is a fairly large bird (definitely larger than even the biggest gulls) with a mottled brown body, a vicious looking beak, wings fully extended and a broad tail, which would give it great control in flight, enabling it to hover for extended periods if necessary.

It’s tiny, but it’s alive (and should hopefully do even better once I repot now that I’ve figured out a latent issue with soils): Drosera chrysolepis.
This is my second attempt with this species, a rare, long-leaved and stem forming fuzzy South American species that is quite picky about getting cool but very sunny conditions. It bears a striking superficial similarity to species like D. capensis or perhaps more so ramentacea, but is wholly unrelated. Convergent evolution is funny like that, and rather makes one wonder what the driving forces for this growth habit are.

Caught something a little special open yesterday: finally, flowers on Drosera brevicornis. Sadly, the only other species in bloom right now (darwinensis) did not have open blooms so no crosses were possible. This thing always looks a little bit of a weird mix between ratty and oversized, like it’s not sure if it’s happy or furious at me, and the flower stalks have behaved the same: three have aborted but remain green and standing, another is developing but has frozen while this current one is in action, and it’s plenty dewy but also with lots of leaves that dropped dew already. Weird thing…

Three exciting developments representing success after a great deal of struggle:
Nepenthes mirabilis echinostoma. I’ve killed 3 of them already, but for some reason this one hung on, and just in the past couple weeks it’s suddenly jumped in size and started making traps with that characteristic wildly flared and ribbed peristome. This is supposed to be a dark clone, so hopefully the color fills in as it ages.
Nepenthes treubiana Andamata is also gaining size, though it has been fairly steadily for a while. Its characteristic bronze color is only just showing now however and should get ever stronger as time goes by. Fingers crossed that this Papuan giant also reaches the huge proportions it should too.
And, N. neoguineensis is also finally showing color and gaining size after having been a struggling little strip of leaf for so long. Leaves are flushing red and the pitchers showing some purple.
With any luck, all three of these will continue to grow over winter in their warm corner, and next year actually be large enough to make feature videos on.

20 Stunning Sunbird Species You Need to Know

You might think hummingbirds hold the monopoly on jewel-toned beauty in the bird world, but sunbirds give them serious competition. These small, nectar-loving birds dazzle with iridescent plumage that shifts colors depending on the light, and their curved beaks make them masters of flower feeding. With over 145 different types of sunbirds spread across Africa, Asia, and parts of Australia, you'll discover an incredible variety of colors, patterns, and behaviors that make each species […]

Terraforming #Mars toward sustainable #life-supporting ecosystems poses unprecedented challenges.

Extremophilic #microbes, which thrive in Earth’s most extreme environments, offer promising biological strategies for initial Mars #colonization providing tools for resource mobilization and atmospheric engineering.

Experimental evidence on microbial survival in Mars-simulated conditions highlights the ecological roles of extremophilic microbial consortia in biogeochemical cycling.

Thwre is a need to shift focus from single-#species assessments to complex, synergistically interacting microbial communities, which may hold the key to establishing self-sustaining extraterrestrial biospheres.

Listen, Look Down, Look Carefully: Your Guide to 20 Wren Species

You're walking through your backyard when you hear it—a surprisingly loud, bubbling song coming from somewhere in the bushes. You scan the trees, but see nothing. Then you look down and spot a tiny brown bird with an upturned tail, disappearing into a brush pile before you can get a good look. You've just encountered one of nature's most charismatic birds: a wren. Wrens may dress in modest browns and grays, but these tiny birds pack outsized personalities into their compact frames. From […]

17 Types of Gulls You’ll See Along Coastlines and Inland Waters

You've probably spotted gulls circling overhead at the beach or gathering in parking lots, but did you know there are dozens of distinct species, each with unique features and behaviors? While many people lump these intelligent seabirds together as "seagulls," learning to identify different types of gulls opens up a fascinating world of avian diversity. From the massive great black-backed gull to the petite Bonaparte's gull, these birds vary dramatically in size, coloring, habitat […]
