One of the #Spelljammer monsters in today's episode is friendly but deadly, while the other is not particularly friendly!

A couple of very tall monsters star in today's episode!

I have to say, these #spelljammer monsters are pleasantly surprising me so far.

@punkpaleo @PTR_K The #Spelljammer Monstrous Compendium credits the Hadozee, Rastipede, and Syllix entries to Doug Niles, who worked on the #StarFrontiers line, so it's pretty clear what he was doing. (I actually disagree with the conventional wisdom about the Plasmoids, partially because Niles didn't create them.)

Last night we finished #ForestFriends #dnd, a casual family friendly adventure following the #Humblewood sourcebook. It was meant to be lower effort palette cleanser after #CurseOfStrahd and I was able to get my son to join which was nice. But man did it fall flat at times. My idea of running it like a self aware cartoon was neat but I really failed to deliver. Blame post-covid slowness of the wit. We'll return using this cast in a #Spelljammer sequel but shelving em for now

Life update May, 2025

Yeah, I know I've been quiet. I've practically been off the grid, so to speak. The last six months haven't been the greatest in my headspace. I pretty much always get this way around the approach of my father's birthday, which was around the time I stopped posting. Another reminder of getting older, things changing, and remembering those who've passed on. It puts me in a real funk where I withdraw and avoid a lot of social interaction. I don't see myself as good company and I don't want to […]

First proper session of #Spelljammer using #Starforged #SunderedIsles today; after the traditional miss on the inciting incident we were off to the races. A great time was had by all, compliments to the speed of the system and the ability of everyone, even the combat-inept captain, to contribute to perilous scenes.

Another great #spelljammer session done!
Watching Brennan DM shortly beforehand while watching #ExuDivergence really brought me in the right mindset to properly and describe situations in detail and being the scenes to life, like he does.

If we went with this interpretation, then civilizations in Fantasy Space might go with two general types of ships:

* fast ships with magical conduit space (which are used for fighting and scouting, where speed are important)
* slower ships with smaller conduits but more internal volume (which are important for trading, because you need to haul more cargo).

Maybe almost logical designs like the Hammership go an intermediate route?

hot take:

a lot of the ship designs have lots of unused volume in their hull which doesn't make much sense - like the giant ram and flanker tail of the squidship, the vertical tail of the dolphin or parts of the abdomen of a neogi deathspider.

this is not supported by the rules, but maybe the unused space could be some kind of magic conduit that speeds the ship up when driven by a spelljammer helm (explaining why groundling ships like the galleon lack such spaces).

thinking about the logistics of a rat invasion - a major problem would be collecting the rats and getting them to leave your ship when its time to do a dastardly ecoterrorism.

You might need Pipes of the Sewers or some kind of vermin commanding magic to collect them. And it would probably be safer to transport them in a disposable cargo barge that a guard ship tows and drops on the target worldlet rather than to put them in your cargo hold.
