The United States Navy's USS Higgins joined HMCS Ottawa in the South China Sea, near the contested Scarborough Shoal, on Thursday. The two warships travelled south together towards the Spratly Islands – a number of which China has militarized.

Despite their overlapping claims in the #SpratlyIslands in the #SouthChinaSea, where #Vietnam and the #Philippines each occupies atolls and reefs, both countries have expressed desire to work together and tackle disputes.

Their coastguards earlier this month held their first-ever joint exercises in Manila, simulating fire-fighting drills and search-and-rescue exercises.

Malaysia should withdraw its claims over the Spratly Islands that overlaps with the Philippines' claims, and fully support (which wouldn't be possible because of our disputes over the WPS/SCS) our case against China

In exchange, we in the Philippines will withdraw our claim over Sabah and give compensation for the permanent artificial features built by the Malaysians on those overlapping claims

Every time I see images of the Sierra Madre, I think how incredibly abandoned you must feel as a Philippino sailor sitting on a rusting scrap-heap, run aground on a god-forsaken rock in the middle of the ocean. If the Philippines navy has a worse hardship posting than this, I can’t imagine what it could possibly be.

Imagine going through a typhoon on this thing…
