The first chamber (pic1) was down a short set of steep stairs, but only illuminated at the top on the landing. Our guide explained how the discoverers used tossing stones to gauge if there was any drop offs and this point was as far as they could go, and the darkness below us indicated a fairly steep cliff before us. She then turned on the lights to reveal a larger cavern below us, quite an awe-inspiring reveal.
We took a staircase that turned back under itself 4 sets until we were in the 2nd chamber (pic2). It was easily 30m across and in height. It had some #stalactites that were long but it did have a massive #stalagmite that from a certain angle the guide said looked like Jabba from Star Wars.
It was one of these 2 chambers where the guide turned the lights out. It was completely dark. Not scary though.

The first chamber after the lights came on. Stalactites hang in a tight formation from a crease in the rock in the ceiling, and rising stalagmites, much thicker, have risen towards them. The silhouettes of other tour group members are in the left lower corner of the image, helping to show how big the chamber is, at about 10m wide and same high. (It isn’t even the second biggest chamber in this cave.)

Warm artificial lighting highlights the textures of the walls and allows the dark creams or soft oranges, through to dark browns in the rocks’ colour to be seen. This colouring applies to all the images in this and following toots. Some colours are almost white on the rocks, but are either from bright lights or the flashlight of the guide.
This chamber is the 2nd biggest, it is easily 30m in diameter in height and width. A staircase that turns back under itself with 4 sets of stairs looks dwarfed by the cavern’s size, is in the middle of the image leading back up to the first chamber. There are fewer stalactites in this chamber but the few here are quite long, 4+metres in length.

Some highlights from the Zbrašov Aragonite Cave — beautiful formations and a fascinating atmosphere, quite literally, as CO₂ pockets lie just meters below the visitor path.

The first photo shows rare geyser-like stalagmites, a unique feature of the cave.

The second photo shows a grotto permanently filled with deadly CO₂, which, luckily, stays there due to being heavier than air.

Just published in Organic Geochemistry, "Fire-induced shifts in stalagmite organic matter mapped using Synchrotron infrared microspectroscopy", led by #ANSTO colleague Dr. Liza McDonough. We demonstrate for the first time that Synchrotron IRM is a promising non-destructive, high resolution (5 µm) technique for analysing stalagmite organic matter. A full on but successful 4 days on the XFM beamline at the Ausgralian Synchrotron. We mixed things up this time by running some tree cores for Casey's PhD work - lots of cool features showing up! We also mapped a bunch of stalagmites, including some pilot data for my next job. 74 elemental maps made, a new record for us!

Here's the longer-term context for the current drying in the furthest SW of #Australia.

The #stalagmite record goes back 800 years into the past. And at no time do we see anything similar to the change in oxygen isotope composition that has occurred in recent decades.

This suggests that the current drying trend is unprecedented in the last 800 years.

The #cave record shows that less #water is moving to the #groundwater by fast-flow, or preferential-flow routes. And that is leading to the observed decline in groundwater levels.

A new study has found evidence of prolonged droughts in the Himalayas that may have contributed to the decline of the Indus Civilization. The study analyzed a stalagmite from a cave and reconstructed the rainfall patterns over 4,000 years ago. The study found three long-lasting droughts that coincided with the reorganization and depopulation of the Indus megacities.
