A dreich day near Dores, Scottish Highlands for today's #StandingStoneSunday

Aldourie 'stone circle', probably originally a Clava type cairn circle, re-erected as a stone circle of 18 stones in parkland near Aldourie Castle.

The largest stone may be in its original position, as most Clava type monuments are graded with the tallest stones on the SW.

Visited towards the end of an increasingly soggy walk from Dores, April 2012.

An irregular ring of 18 standing stones in gently sloping parkland. The tallest stone is nearest to the viewer, a triangular slab. The ground slopes downwards from the circle to a small lake fringed with trees. The viewer is standing beneath a tree and its branches overhang into the top of the shot. It's raining quite heavily and tree isn't providing much shelter.

Holiday to the Orkney islands with ma and pa. Very windy, wet, and cold. At times like filling in a bingo card of archaeological sites. But a beautiful part of the world I’d never otherwise see, and time well spent with my parents.

The recumbent stones are to the left. Photo taken an hour ago, the sun setting with Bennachie on the horizon. Stunning location. All stones have survived none mussing. They have never had to be re-erected.

Changeable weather at Broomend of Crichie complex near Inverurie for today's #StandingStoneSunday

A Neolithic henge (a circular earthwork with an external ditch) contains the remains of a stone circle. Two stones remain, the third is a carved Pictish symbol stone that was moved into the site later. There is also an avenue and various outlying stones.

Visited April 2012.

Three large standing stones inside a grass-covered circular earthen bank. The stone on left is carved with Pictish symbols and is not original to the monument. It's very overcast with heavy grey rainclouds filling the sky.

Strangehollow is a vast enchanted place, you will find ancient standing stones on the outskirts, however this means you will also find fairies, which, like most things you'll find there, are not harmless. Savage Strangehollow - launches later this year! #watercolour #standingstones #painting #art

At Metheral Stone Circle, recently rediscovered last year by Alan Endacott. Most of the stones are hidden in the grass and peat of Taw Marsh, but the setting between Metheral Hill and Oke Tor, overlooked by Steeperton Tor is striking. I hadn't visited this valley before, so it was good to explore new ground.

Printed colour postcard showing The Four Stones at Clent Hills in Worcestershire, a folly constructed in c.1750. Published by John Price & Sons, Bilston. Not numbered. Postally unused, but is c.1910.

A vintage colour postcard of the Four Stones on the Clent Hills near Stourbridge in Worcestershire. The stones, although they look quite authentic, are actually a relatively modern folly constructed in about 1750 by order of Lord Lyttelton of Hagley Hall. The four tall stones stand in an arc with a green hilltop behind.

Post-Holiday Blues: It’s been a week since we have been back from our two week summer holidays in Lewis, and, it already seems like it didn’t even happen (but the freshly developed negatives say otherwise). ... #Photography, #FilmPhotography, #LargeFormat, #Lewis, #OuterHebrides, #StandingStones: aye.tf/2025/05/26/post-holiday

Sonata for a Turd and Two Neolithic Stones: I have a yet to be developed negative in the works that I have great hopes for, with the above working title. It was taken at Callanish II, and I only spotted the turd when the camera was fully set up: fresh, large and well formed, tastefully decorated with toilet paper. I am pretty sure its author was on a Rabbies tour which stopped there only about 20min earlier while I was taking pictures at the nearby Callanish III. This is in a village, 100m from someone’s house. It would have required suitable tools to remove, which I didn’t have with me … what the fuck is wrong with people?! ... #Scotland, #VisitScotland, #StandingStones, #Turd, #Photography, #LargeFormat: aye.tf/2025/05/20/sonata-for-a

Wander through the countryside in Portugal's Castelo de Vide and you’ll find the Megalithic Park of Coureleiros: a cluster of several Neolithic dolmens scattered across farmland, some nearly lost to time.

In my latest video, I explore what’s left of these ancient tombs …and what they still have to tell us!

Prospidnick Longstone, a 3m tall menhir at Prospidnick near Helston in Cornwall. Photographed from the north-north-east on 22 April 2003.

A colour photo of the menhir at Prospidnick in the parish of Sithney, Cornwall. The standing stone is on the edge of a low hedge beside a minor road and leans slightly towards the field. The photo is taken towards the sun and much of the stone is in silhouette. A red-tinged light flare is to the bottom left.
